I just got a new computer- never used yet. What do you recommend to cleanup (get rid of) all the advertisement and junk, free 60 day trials-that comes with a new computer?

Patch reliability is unclear. Unless you have an immediate, pressing need to install a specific patch, don't do it. |

A good free utility for removing unwanted programs is Revo Uninstaller.

If it is a Dell, I usually do a clean install using their installation discs – I find it the cleanest and quickest method.

That’s certainly an alternative that many people select. However, a clean install will rewrite the existing MBR and will “break” the functionality of the Dell Recovery Partition. In other words, the user won’t be able to restore the computer to the “as shipped from the factory” state, using the built-in Dell tool. To many of us who use disk imaging programs, this is not a concern. But to those who do not, then a clean install might prove problematic if there is ever a desire to “restore to factory shipped” in the future.

Some time ago a utility called PC Decrapifier was suggested for this purpose. But I have hardly heard mention of it in the last year or so. Perhaps ‘check it out’ for applicability to your environment?

Some programs have the reputation for not uninstalling cleanly or completely. For instance, Googling for “complete uninstall norton 360” leads to the page Norton 360 How to uninstall. It might be worthwhile doing similar searches for other unwanted programs, in order to discover any special procedures or tools that will leave your new unit “properly” cleaned up.
