Non-IT pro, long time reader/follower, first time poster here. So thanks to Woody et al for all the good advice. And hello.

I want to update from 1809 to 1903. My standard prevention is to set network to metered, then use group policy to max out days delay on security and feature updates. So, with 1903 having been released 349 (?) days ago I simply rolled the feature delay back to an arbitrary amount beyond this (set at 310 days at the moment) and disabled the metered network block. The PC has checked multiple times now (I set to check hourly in GP) over more than a day but nothing has been offered.

I guess I must be doing something glaringly obviously stupid but can’t figure out what it is. Any ideas please?

See AKB2000016 Guide for Windows Update Settings for Win10 for some information on settings.

For Win10 Pro, if you follow the example at the bottom, and set the Feature deferral at 300, you should be offered 1903 (anything less than 175 should give you 1909, 200 to 320 should give you 1903). Be sure you have Windows Update set to Enabled, value = 2.
You should have no Pause set and Metered connections turned off.
If you change the Feature deferral, you can use wushowhide.diagcab to see if the 1903 upgrade is available. The setting of “2” should keep the upgrade from downloading until you click on the “Download” button.

Or you can use the MS Media Creation Tool to get 1909 – the version currently recommended by Woody.

      cheers, Paul

If you want 1903 download the ISO file at HeiDoc.net. Woody recommended 1909 for all users.

      Thanks both.

I didn’t realise Woody was now recommending 1909. Last time I recall a recommendation was soon after 1909 was released when he said 1809 was still by far the most stable. I guess I need to pay closer attention :-).

Really, all I want 1903 for is to be able to view RAW image file thumbnails. Apart from that I’ve no problem with 1809.

Do realize that support for Win10 v1903 ends on December 8, 2020 as noted here:
      https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/13853/windows-lifecycle-fact-sheet

no more updates will be issued for 1903 after December 2020

woody is recently recommending 1909 (aka 1903 SP) only because MS is getting set to release the upcoming 2004 version around the end of May 2020 and that 1909 now is stable than it was several months ago.

I’m fine with running a version up to the end of support date (as with the 1809 until this week) and, in case I haven’t read otherwise, stick with oldest supported version. Simply hadn’t spotted the recommendation to switch to 1909. But all sorted and switched now, problem free.

Did you know that because of the pandemic, MS has extended support for 1809?
