The process I use to work against AI hallucinations is to check my enquiry with three or four different AIs. I look for the common elements in their responses.

I suspect Ai is a passing fad – at least as used now. The problem with  your worthy advice of “Double-check anything “factual” that AI tells you” is to determine what is in fact, fact, and what is an AI fake.

I checked some technical characteristics of an obscure electronic part – and found four versions of the same “fact.” All four online articles were different – as in adjectives replaced with synonyms, and similar verbs in each. The number of paragraphs was the same. The order and content of the paragraphs were the same. The conclusions were the same. These were obviously AI fakes – or AI rewrites of an original.

I see AI as doing some of the work a person should do, and generating more work for people to fact check. Net gain, zero. However, somewhat amusing.

I use Perplexity AI for my stock quote book value answer.  Most of the financial sites give the price to book value  but then you have to use the equation to figure out the actual book value for the day.  This way you ask it as a question, “what is the book value of so and so stock.?”  Gives the answer right away.
