I have a Dell Venue Pro 8 running Windows 8.1. Even though flash is built in I can’t remember it ever working.

IE Flash updates 2957151, 2966072 and 2974008 have all failed to install even when I’ve tried to manually install them. Even though both 2957151 and 2966072 failed to install, they don’t appear in the updates to install list, only 2974008 does.

The failed updates claim that KB2808380 is a prerequisite, but it isn’t showing up in the update history and I have found no way to manually install it. So it doesn’t even show up as a failed install. The KB page for it is useless: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2808380

I’ve also tried the Windows Update Trouble Shooter twice:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/how-solve-connection-problems-windows-update
    http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9830262

The 1st time claimed it fixed:
    – Service registration is missing or corrupt
    – Windows update error 0x80073712(2014-07-25-T-09_51_17A)
    – Problems installing recent updates

The 2nd time it ran it found and fixed the same issues, although the update error item changed to 0x80073712(2014-07-25-T-10_58_05A)

Perhaps the automated troubleshooter is failing but not notifying you. See How do I reset Windows Update components? for steps to reset Windows Update manually.

Flash Player is an Adobe product, have you tried installing from https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/?

With Windows 8 & 8.1, Flash player is integrated with IE. There is no separate install. Flash gets updated every month as part of patch Tuesday.

Thank you Joel for replying with a direction to take. Unfortunately, after trying this I got the exact same results.

I decided to then look up the Windows update error 0x80073712, which lead me to this page:
          http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/windows-update-error-0x80073712

As you can see by the screenshots, the “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth” worked.

However, “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” initially looked like it was working and then didn’t complete.

          Here’s the log file:
          http://www.captainken.us/files/dism.log

Not sure if this should be my next step as recommended in the error message, and I wouldn’t know where to begin with it.

Is the Flash Player from MS only for use with IE?

Assuming it was for anything requiring flash, I install the monthly update, and have been puzzled by the fact that many sites ask for Adobe Flash. I use FF rather than IE

Yes, the monthly Internet Explorer Flash patch is for IE only. For FF you must install Flash from Adobe. I recommend you let Flash update itself automatically.

GeorgeLee and Berton, you guys are saying the Flash works for you in FF, but not in IE?

Adobe Flash Player is working for me in Win7, Win8.1, Mac OS X 10 and Linux Mint 17. Win 7 and Win8.1 use both IE11 and Firefox 30 [had to remove FF31 due to other issue] while Mac and Linux use Firefox.
