An annoying notification

I have Win 10 Pro Version 22H2 and, from the beginning, I’ve had notifications disabled via Settings | System | Notifications & actions. Ever since I toggled off Notifications in that location, the only notifications I’ve ever received were for Windows Defender updates. (Despite my best efforts, I haven’t been able to get Windows Defender to update automatically, so such notifications are a actually a good thing, but that’s another story.)

This morning I updated Windows — everything except the optional stuff — rebooted after the updates were done and then went on to other, non-computer, things. When I next used the computer, I saw I had a notification which said: “Get a head start in Valorant with PC Game Pass.” That’s exactly the sort of nonsense that doesn’t interest me and which I thought I’d put an end to by toggling off notifications, but there it was.

Is there any explanation for this annoyance? Is it just something that, with the most recent update, Microsoft decided it had to force on me for my own good, notwithstanding my notification settings, or does this now suggest that I’m going to be getting more unwanted notifications unless, if possible, I do something about it? And if I do have to do something to prevent my getting more notifications, what should I do?

Given that Microsoft only knows what they are up to, I can only guess.  I’ve seen a recent popup with a paint application.

I’m guessing yours came from the Xbox game app?

See if that is still enabled?

I don’t know what to do but I sympathize with you. The software companies seem to be able to sell us some crap whenever the can. I hate to say it, but we have a government that doesn’t want to do anything and they know nothing except to get elected. We need a new government with no privileges’.

I guess that must have been it.

I have only a vague notion of what Xbox refers to — apparently video games? — mainly because of the name, and I’ve occasionally seen references to it where the context suggests gaming being discussed. Sort of like knowing that there’s something called a Kardashian who’s some sort of celebrity that people enjoy making fun of, but without probing to find out anything about it.

Anyway, although I’ve never knowingly gone into Settings | Gaming (but maybe I once slept walked without knowing it?), per your message I went in just now and saw the Xbox Game Bar was toggled on. I quickly toggled it off, so I’m guessing the problem is solved until next time.

Oops, the notification came back today, although, following the advice here, I had toggled off the Xbox Game Bar, and it was still toggled off when I looked just now.

This is not such a huge problem that I’ll become bitter and resentful if it can’t be solved, but I do prefer not to have electronics yapping at me without my permission.

Are there any other ways I can try to stop this notification?

I too had my Notifications set to none and got some ad for Xbox. I also found that both the Xbox Game bar and the Xbox Game mode had been turned on (I never have used Xbox). In my situation the Windows key on the keyboard was deactivated by this Xbox push and none of the Windows key shortcuts would work even after I turned both the Xbox Game bar and the Game Mode off. I ultimately uninstalled the Xbox Live app on my PC which immediately allowed my Windows key to start working again. While I don’t use Xbox, I do use Microsoft’s other games such as Freecell, Sudoku, and Solitaire and endure Microsoft’s ads to play those games. I figured Microsoft push that to me because I play some of their games. I think Microsoft should think about pushing ads that don’t break the potential customer’s PC… a lot better chance of a sale.

That means you can manually format your post’s content using SOME BBCode. However, the best way to format your post’s content if you are not familiar with BBCode-ing is to use the Format buttons in the title bar of the Entry box (which puts the format coding in for you).

If you use the Format buttons, you can see the BBCode by looking in the “Text” Tab at the top of the Entry Box.
