An April Patch Watch special-edition report

    By Susan Bradley

As if the list of April’s Patch Tuesday nonsecurity fixes wasn’t long enough, Microsoft has just released another downpour of patches. These are, for the most part, operating-system updates, primarily for Windows 8.1. None are critical.

I also got this one on Windows 7:

      3048761
Information or messages are not updated automatically in an application
(This issue occurs because memory leak occurs in Desktop Window Manager (DWM.exe) when a window changes its parent window in an application.)

I haven’t been offered any new updates since this month’s main patch day on my Windows 7 machines. The ones from then that I am holding onto for the moment are 3037574 and 3037581, plus 2952664 (which I have previously hidden but which has been re-offered this month) and 2990214 as I believe they are both what I call “Windows 10 marketing tools” and I have no interest in upgrading from Windows 7. The machine with Office on it also has 2965299 outstanding.

The only update in the main batch that I had problems with was 304682 which failed to install with the others on one of my two machines (error code 80F0902), prior to which the usual Malicious Software Removal Tool had been offered and withdrawn. After the main batch installed I was offered the MSRT which installed ok but took a few minutes longer than usual, and then the problem update 304682 installed ok on its own.

Is there a cumulative & constantly updated Patch Watch Report so that I would not have to go to every Patch Watch report when trying to determine which patches I want to install?

      • #1501804

I have been unable to add search providers to IE10 or IE11 on multiple PCs in multiple locations after installation of KB3038314. After creating a new ID, the only search provider available in IE is BING. (Watch BING’s market share soar!!) This is consistent with the Project Spartan browser in Windows 10 Tech Preview. Seems MS is pushing down Win10 changes in KB297698/KB3044374 (Win8) and KB2952664/KB2990214 (Win7) ahead of time so when the unsuspecting User says “YES” to the KB3035583 GWX (Get Windows 10) popup offering an “Update” for free through Win Update, they get a whole new Operating System and one %$#@*% of a surprise!

I would like to know this too. Susan writes to check the lounge, but I can find nothing more than the same list that she publishes in the newsletter, not yet updated.

It’s too early yet to know if there are issues with those updates.

I have a rough scratch pad listing of the updates from November to April at http://www.patchchart.com

    • #1502558

Perhaps I missed them, but I can’t find KB 3037574 and KB 3037581. Please tell me where to find updated information on these after April 16, 2015.

      Thanks.

      Charles

When I was checking my updates today, an old one popped up and I cannot find anything on it. The number is 2538243 from 4/2012. It is the C++ SP1. Any ideas on installing this?

    • #1502638

Both are .NET Framework updates that Susan recommended not installing at this time in the April Patch Watch column (which is her “standard” position on new .NET updates).

She posted a link to her OneDrive list until the master Patch Watch chart is updated…

      http://www.patchchart.com

Thanks for your reply; however, I’m unable to find any mention of KB 3037574 or KB 3037581 in this link.

Is additional information available on these .NET updates?

These are outstanding April 2015 updates on which we are awaiting Susan Bradley’s further advice, they should be held for now.

They’re listed as MS15-041, which says Okay to install: Yes.

    • #1502649

The only update listed on the chart under MS15-041 and stated to be ok to install is KB3048010, the ones we’re discussing aren’t mentioned other than in the main April Patch Watch where Susan says to hold them and she will revisit them here, which she has yet to do.

That’s the KB article which includes those two patches amongst 10 for different versions of .NET and Windows.

You can’t install KB3048010, only one or more of the patches listed within it; e.g. the two we’re discussing.

I have not seen any issues with the .NET updates for April, they are safe to install. The chart lists the “master” KB, it doesn’t necessarily list all KBs as you see them.

          Thanks Susan.

Will you be reporting separately on the optional updates that have appeared variously since the main Patch Day?

    • #1502659

Thanks, but I find it all very confusing, not least the bit about not having a Patch Watch when there’s a fifth Thursday in the month! Let’s hope we get some clarity on April’s updates before May’s get released.

    • #1502667

Or just backup your system and install the patches. I think that for at least the last 10 years I’ve installed all the patches every month on multiple systems both at home and at work. I had a problem once in that time on one system. I used to watch commentary about patches, wait for at least a week, and then try to pick and choose which patches to install. Somehow, I figured out that for me all that was a gigantic waste of time and effort. With a solid backup I don’t worry about the patches because I know I can recover relatively easily. I understand that for people who worry about hundreds of systems or more that taking more time and testing on a few systems at once is required.

I’d rather spend my time doing something else.

I used to manage hundreds of systems and it was always good to test, but I don’t remember any particular problems occurring with updates – anti virus updates on the other hand…….

      cheers, Paul

Just checked Windows Update on my system (8.1) and the optional updates I was holding on installing are all no longer showing.
Have these now been pulled back?

      Try Restore hidden updates?

    • #1504064

Tks Bruce but they were not hidden just sitting uninstalled.

      Edit:
I’m not the only one seeing this. Scroll all the way down to the last response posted today by “Sam”.
I forgot to mention the only one I had waiting that’s still there is also KB3022345 as he posts.

Tried to edit my original post but I guess I did something wrong as it’s not showing up.

OK mystery solved. These updates are now back included with the new updates just posted today but now showing as “Important” updates.

    • #1504074
