So I have a venerable XPS laptop from 2015 that has served me well over the years. It came with Windows 8.1 and upgraded happily to Windows 10 and I expect it will retire later this year as it won’t support Windows 11.

It has a 256GB SSD, and when I checked some time ago to see how worn it is with ClearDiskInfo or CrystalDiskInfo, they reported that it was nearing the end of its life – understandable after so many years with a relatively small drive.

But then something strange happened. Both apps suddenly seemed to think that the drive was new. ClearDiskInfo went from warning it was failing to green and CrystalDiskInfo went back to reporting its health status as 100%

Not a big deal as this laptop is ready to retire, but I’m curious to understand why its SSD suddenly appears to be “new”…?

The SSD has reached EOL and the firmware has a bug that resets the life indicator?
How much data written does it report? (Total Host Writes)

      cheers, Paul

15645 GB on Crystal Disk Info

-1548659851 GB on Clear Disk Info (yes, minus…)

Give it a check with Hard Disk Sentinel, https://www.hdsentinel.com/index.php fully working trial which tends to show more accurate details (some are vendor-specific so can be easily misread).

The forum there is frequented by the developer, who has always seemed to be ready to help and should be able to clear up any confusion over what’s real and what’s wrong.
