I have an annoying problem with two outline numbered styles that share the same Level 1 style.
I can get either one to work correctly by itself, but if BOTH are in the same template then one works and the other looses all numbering. bouncenburn

Resetting the ‘bad’ style causes it to work but the other now looses its numbering. bwaaah

The Level 1 styles called ‘Side_head’, in the first outline the level 2 style is ‘numbered’. In the second style the Level 2 is ‘Alpa’

Would I be correct to assume that you can’t have two outline numbered styles sharing the same Level 1 style?

I don’t know if there is a correct “yes” or “no” answer to your question. However, I tried to create my own outline styles and had a lot of problems, so I eventually gave up on creating my own, customized Heading 1 through Heading 5, and saved that as a template for future outline use.

You can’t use the same style in two different numbering schemes (= list templates).

What you can do is make both the “level 2” style and the “level 3” style restart numbering on the “level1” style:
In the dialog for setting up the numbering for the “level 3” style, change the “Restart numbering after: Level 2” dropdown to “Level 1”.

The “level 2” and the “level 3” would then be numbered independently:

      I Heading 1
      1. (Level 2 style)
      2. (Level 2 style)

      1. (Level 3 style)
      3. (Level 2 style)
      2. (Level 3 style)

      II Heading 1
      1. (Level 2 style)
      1. (Level 3 style)

If you want the two “level 2” styles to number identically:

      I Heading 1
      1. (Level 2a style)
      2. (Level 2a style)

      3. (Level 2b style)

you could just put only the “Level 2a” styles in the List template, and base the “Level 2b” style on it.
I don’t know how reliable this is, though, since only one of the “level 2” styles can be really linked to the list template. Weird things could happen…

Might be safer to use {ListNum} fields. You could use AutoNumbering for the Level 1 and Level 2 styles, and use an unnumbered style with {ListNum L2 } for the other “Level 2” style.

      cheers Klaus

Thanks Klaus you’ve given me something to think about.
Its a pity that outline numbering isn’t simpler to use.
