• Appendices with sublevel headings

We frequently have documents with Appendices with sublevel headings. For example

    Appendix B Heading 7
    B.1 Heading 8
    B.1.1 Heading 9

We handle this by using Styles 7, 8, and 9 in order to automatically number them and create this numbering in the multilevel lists. Now I have a document that goes down to a 5th level like so

    Appendix B Heading 7
    B.1 Heading 8
    B.1.1 Heading 9
    B.1.1.1 xxxxxxx
    B.1.1.1.1 xxxxxx

I don’t know how to get these to number like this with fields codes. Is there a way? It’s quite a large appendix, 180 pages.

There is text in the document that uses headings 1 through 5 in the normal fashion.

Build a separate outline list number stream for the Appendix. That way, headings can go to level 9, and appendices can go to level 9.

You can set the Appendix styles to also use outline levels (via the Paragraph Format dialog) if you want to see them in the outline view. This is independent of the outline list levels.

I tried this before and I tried it again. It changes my whole document rather than just the one appendix. Yes I am using section breaks!

It sounds like you are modifying the existing outline number list rather than creating a new one.

Can you post a sample document with most content stripped out for privacy?

Sample attached as requested. Appendix B is what is giving me fits. I tried different levels of headings to see how they reacted and they are still in Appendix B. So that will need to be adjusted. I believe you are right that I was modifying the existing outline numbering rather than creating a new one. Not sure how to tell it to create a new one for that section.

See 18 levels of numbering without tears for one way of doing this.

Amyaybar: One of the keys to using more than one multilevel list is that a style can only be linked to one list. I would use Heading 9 for the Appendix title (so you can keep the chapter-numbered pages) and link it to level 1 of the new list then create 4 or 5 AppxHd styles and link them. It may not be necessary, but I would make sure that none of the appxHd styles are based on the Headings 1-8 and I would name the ListNum field for the new list.

Andrew: I was hoping that you meant to use two separate lists. I’ve experimented with them but have not actually used them in a production document. You must be busy or you’d have answered by now. Please correct any mistakes in the advice I gave.
