Thanks for the heads up.

The link you provided is being blocked in my Firefox browser, but MajorGeeks has just updated their download page <here> and is now offering the latest ASoft .NET Version Detector 22 R2.  The download page on the Softpedia site <here> (my usual download page) is still offering the previous version 22 R1 (rel. June 2022), so I sent them an email asking them to post the latest version 22 R2.

My bad, I “copied” the link from an email I received about the update and, because my SeaMonkey browser automatically adds S to http:// when trying to connect to web sites, I didn’t realize it pointed to their insecure http:// download page instead of their secure https:// one!

Browsing to the secure https: site didn’t help me.  There’s something about the IP address of that ASoft.be site that both my Firefox v105.0.1 browser and my Malwarebytes Premium v4.5.14.210 Web Protection module don’t like (see attached image).

I seem to recall having similar problems when I tried downloading previous versions of the ASoft .NET Version Detector from the developer’s home page.  That’s why I normally wait for updates to be posted on the MajorGeeks or Softpedia sites – as a general rule I always download software from the developer’s official download page but ASoft .NET Version Detector (which I really like) is one of the few exceptions.

My Firefox 105.0.1 does not object to https://www.asoft.be/prod_netver.html . I do not use Malwarebytes, though.

Bother! I was trying to recall the app this morning, gave up and did the update the hard way (update catalog) then found your post.

Group A (but Telemetry disabled Tasks and Registry)
1) Dell Inspiron with Win 11 64 Home permanently in dock due to "sorry spares no longer made".

My Firefox 105.0.1 does not object to https://www.asoft.be/prod_netver.html . I do not use Malwarebytes, though.

My Fx 102.3.0 ESR shows no way to download .NET Version Detector. I have to use Edge to download it (happened with the previous version also).

My security suite allowed me to download the zip file.

But when I extracted the EXE file, the security suite said:
– Less than 5 users have used this file.
– The program was released less than 1 week ago.
– dotnetver.exe has no reputation.
The security suite immediately deleted the EXE file.

All of this occurred automatically.

Since I don’t have a strong need for this file, I will drop further investigation. Almost all ZIP files I download don’t have this problem. So I will wait a few weeks or months to see if the file ever develops a good reputation.

What security suite are you using? That “reputation” block sounds a lot like the Norton Security AV I used up until 2019 before I purchased my Win 10 computer.

Neither my Microsoft Defender or Malwarebytes Premium real-time protection flag the dotnetver.exe executable for the latest ASoft .NET Version Detector 22 R2 as unsafe. I uploaded that dotnetver.exe executable to Virustotal.com and the scan report <here> shows it currently has a detection rating of 2/71, which means only 2 of 71 antivirus engines [BitdefenderTheta (Bitdefender’s “special” machine learning scanner) and MaxSecure] flag this file as suspicious. When I used Norton as my AV I always uploaded any newly released executable Norton flagged as having a poor reputation (e.g., because it wasn’t widely used in the larger Norton community) to VirusTotal.com, and if the file wasn’t detected by popular antivirus engines like Bitdefender, ESET, Kaspersky, McAfee, Symantec, etc. I knew it was safe to use.

No issues.

Having no virus detected in an executable is not good enough for us, no matter how many virus engines are run against a file. Virus scans don’t work well with polymorphic viruses or new unknown malware. What also matters is the assignment of a good reputation.

Those who rely just on virus scanning and/or code signing are missing the bigger picture. No technique is infallible.

We defer to the judgment of the security suite, although we can override it, if really necessary. The number of false positives are negligible. Generally, no reputation is a no go for us, unless we know and trust who wrote it. We don’t need to be first.

Separately, with our security suite, we have the power to remove an executable from quarantine, and run it anyway, because we decided to trust the program. We could have chosen instead to trust the reviews and/or reports from others.

Finally, the reputation database was updated, and now reports, a few days later, the reputation of the new dotnetver.exe version is good.

After getting a pass from the security suite, “Microsoft Defender” complained:

Microsoft is also into the reputation business:

Settings->Update & Security->Open Windows Security->App & browser control->Reputation-based protection settings->Check apps and files->On

“Microsoft Defender SmartScreen helps protect your device by checking for unrecognized apps and files from the web.”

While we don’t run Microsoft Defender or Edge, this Microsoft reputation stuff is turned on for our Windows 10 machines.

I just launched the Asoft .NET Version Detector v22 R2 I downloaded from https://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Info/ASoft–NET-Version-Detector.shtml in Sept 2022 and it runs fine with no warnings on my Win 10 v21H2 laptop. I use Microsoft Defender as my primary real-time protection, with Malwarebtyes Premium running in real-time as “secondary” protection.

I’m not 100% certain, but as far as I know I’m using the default settings for App & Browser Control | Reputation-Based Protection in Windows Security.
