In an effort to clean up unwanted or no longer used applications I was browsing Control Panel’s Add Remove Program recently. While nearly all the entries in Add Remove Programs are known to me I ran accros an entry that I am unable to associate with any application or executable file. I also am unable to locate any subfolder in Program Files that might be the home of the mysterious application.

I tried looking in All Programs under the Start Menu but was unable to locate any application with the name I see in Add Remove Programs ( or any name close to it for that matter).

When I highlight an entry in Add Remove Programs, it sometimes shows 2 clickable buttons, i.e. Update or Remove. Clicking on Update can show me information that makes clear what application this is. This particular application, however, has only the Remove button. I could remove it, but I would prefer to know what I am removing before I actually take that step.

Does anyone know of a method to associate the entry in Add Remove Programs to an application, an application executable and an application folder?
If there is no method, does a utility program exist that will accomplish this task, if so please identify 1 or more and where to get them.

You have not stated what the name of the program is. Perhaps knowing that could help us better respond to your issue. HTH

Well, I purposely didn’t identify the Add-Remove-Programs name for the application I am wondering about because what I want to know is a method, i.e. a series of steps to take to give me the answer to my question. The actual answer to my question, “What does application x do?” isn’t as important to me as how to get the answer to question.

If the method I am requesting requires the use of a special utility that does all or most of the work I asked that those be identified as well.

The old saying, “Give a man a fish and eat eats for a day, teach a man to fish and he eats for a lifetime” applies here. I want to be taught how to fish, not be given a fish. So, if for this question there truely isn’t any method and the only way is to rely on someone else who knows, (i.e. be given a fish), then okay. But I don’t yet have any evidence of that being true.

You can try using the free version of Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware – Free and Full Download. When you run it and get a list of programs you can right click on the program and select “Install Location”. That may give yo a hint of what it about or what you might be able to search on.

Look at the subkeys under the following registry key: HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionUninstall. Click on the appropriate subkey to see what the path is. If its still not obvious what it is, then you can at least find the executable and look at its properties.
