Attaching a Help File to a Button (Access 2000)

I’ve created a Help file for my database. I can get it to work when I press F1, but I don’t know how to put a button on the form and get it to go to the same help file section when I click it.

You can set the HelpFile and HelpContextID properties in the properties sheet of the form which will result in that topic coming up when you press F1 from that form. You don’t ordinarily launch help with a button click on a form, but if you have set the HelpFile and HelpContextID of the form, you could have a button to use the much-maligned SendKeys to pass an F1 and launch help.

Okay, I’ve tried using a macro to do the SendKeys. I put F1 as the Keystrokes, and No for the Wait. It didn’t work. I also tried {F1} as the Keystrokes. That didn’t work either. I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. That’s what the Access Help said to do???

{F1} is the correct syntax for sending the F1 function key. What happens if you run this macro by itself? It should open the Access help file.

Hi again Hans,

It doesn’t work. When I run the Macro itself, on the status bar at the bottom, it says “Setting Up Wizards”. It has one little blue block beside it, but it never has any more than that. It’s as if it’s starting to set up wizards, but hangs. I end up having to do a shut down on my Access task because I can’t close the Access program otherwise.

In that case, the error is probably not with your macro, but a problem with getting help files to open. Can you open the Access online help at all by pressing F1?

Yes, I press F1 and I get my Help file. No problem there.

Sorry, I really don’t know what is wrong. It sounds like you have a problem with your Access installation, but I wouldn’t know how to solve this from a distance.
