Hello. About to give up so I seek your help. I had to clone back my Toshiba and on booting, it looked for this dreaded Realtek audio. It never accepted it. While this was taking place, it also disabled my audio device, I have tried to get it going again to no avail. I tried D/Ling drivers from the Web, no joy. I restarted many a time, still nothing. I am on 10041. As long as I am a devoted Insider, I am obligated to let them control this, but there ought to be a way to fool them, no ? Standing by in earnest.
I know this was explained here before but I can not find it anymore. I get to gpedit.msc fine but I can not find the proper line to edit. Let me know, please. Jean.

I believe there are two ways to fix this:

1. Do a Windows Update. Check the optional/hardware updates, to see if there is one for your audio. If so, install it, then reboot it. That may fix it.

2. Go to Device Manager. Right-click on the audio device, and choose Properties. Go to the Details tab. One or more of the Properties will have a VEN and DEV number listed. For example: VEN_10DE&DEV_000B. In this case, VEN = 10DE, and DEV = 000B. Now go here and look up the driver, using the VEN and DEV numbers.

I could not follow your advice on this problem as the audio device is totally removed from my system, I suspect that Realtek is the culprit, I am looking into it. Thanks a mega for your interest. Jean.

Jean, you still have some sort of audio hardware on your motherboard. If you see nothing in Device Manager or in the optional Windows updates, then your audio hardware is defective. In this case, you could install a sound card.

If you do see something in Device Manager, then there should be VEN and DEV numbers somewhere within the listing.

I might have guessed, when you said that it was a Toshiba.

What about this? A USB audio adapter.

Rich, hello.
Thanks for the URL as requested. I now have it saved on paper, which I should have done weeks ago. I will try it again later, I will clone the Toshiba first, never too cautious. When looking into it before, I had remembered the gpedit.msc command and got to a “System” spot but not the right one. I will keep you up on the ensuing results.
Not much to see on Earth in Stockbridge, VT ! :rolleyes: I looked it up as I had a 38′ sloop in Point Bay, Charlotte, VT for 15 years. Loved VT ! All best wishes. Jean.

Rich ( and Ian ) thanks for the URL. This morning, I was able to install the Realtek audio on one Toshiba laptop. It does not show the small brown speaker icon on the Notification Area of the Taskbar but what the Heck, it plays. #2 Toshiba will be tried tomorrow. All best wishes. Jean.

I followed the instructions to increase the installer timeout using Gpedit, and it worked fine (it seemed to fix things behind the scenes, while I wasn’t looking). However, I was more concerned with HD bloat, and found 7.5GB (of apparent audio driver packages) in WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository. Since I am using a small partition to house W10, I need all the help I can get. I used RAPR from https://driverstoreexplorer.codeplex.com/ to show multiple packages with slightly different names. I had to select them and delete one-by-one, but it reduced the store to 500MB. I had to reluctantly install .Net 3.5 to run RAPR, but that was a small price to pay.

I think that W10 was trying successive vns of the drivers, in the hope that one would install – that or downloading the same thing dozens of times, and keeping each failed download.

This may also explain the interminable delays when installing build 10041.

There was another Realtek driver release for an unrelated issue so perhaps they have merged and cured the original problem?

Jim, hello and thanks again for a steady try at helping me. The problem was solved after I got to change the time in gpedit.msc. Then, Realtek installed fine. It sure helps when one knows what to do, this after being pointed to the solution. Thanks to all. Jean.
