How can I generate an auto number field and then have this field indexed in a make table query?

You can’t. You’ll have to add the AutoNumber field after running the make-table query, either manually or using code.

How about adding a auto number manually, then running a delete query to delete all records then running an append query to the empty table?

That’s possible. The AutoNumber won’t start at 1 again, but that shouldn’t be a problem.

Actually, if none of the service packs for Office/Access 2000 are installed, the Autonumber *will* restart at 1 even when it shouldn’t. That bug was fixed, unfixed and refixed by the several Office 2000 service packs.
