Auto numbering limitations? (Word97 SR2)

I have 3 chapters in one doc, each in its own Section, and each with auto numbered figure captions with chapter number to the left of the decimal as in 4.xx, 5.yy, 6.zz. PROBLEM: Changes to the chapter number in the numbering dialogue become global for all chapters/Sections. How can I to set a different number for each chapter (apart from making multiple files).

Couple of questions:

What changes are you trying to make to the chapter number in the numbering dialog? – If you’re trying to change, say, the formatting of the chapter number then yes that will become a global change across the entire document. But if you’re simply trying to get a different chapter number for each chapter (4, 5, 6) then you shouldn’t be running into difficulties.

How are you generating the chapter number? – this should be done using an outline numbering list, and it should be linked to a style.

It works! Your last line, pointing me at ‘Include chapter numbers…’ was a revelation. I didn’t realise that the chapter numbers have to be generated automatically for this to work. A thousand thanks. Dave
