auto numbering/numbered lists (Word 2000)

I need simplified instructions on how to create a numbered list using number format 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, etc. and continuing on to the next section with 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, etc. I have tried this several different ways and am getting very frustrated trying to get it to work. I also need to know which features (i.e. autoformat features) need to be turned on to get this to work. Thank you

Try both *Recommended Settings* and *Outline Numbering Made Easy* at http://www.thewordexpert.com/word.htm%5B/url%5D

For your outline numbering, you will need to hit the custom button and put a 1 behind the *grayed* number in the wide box at the top. That should work, though I admit I haven’t had to do it for a few weeks.

Hi Ayla:
Just to add, do not turn on autoformat features. That is not the way you want to develop numbering. There are a few things under Tools/AutoCorrect/AutoFormat as you type that can be left on (such as smart quotes), but if you leave everything ticked, your formatting will change against your will.

(2) Some time ago I produced an illustrated guide to building an outline numbered list that is linked to styles; I can’t post it here but if you send me a private Lounge message with your e-mail address, I can send a copy to you. Simplified is a relative term when dealing with word outline numbering; although fairly simplified, the guide is still more than 20 pages long.
