I am looking for something to record an audio online meeting which includes vocal input from the user. Will this program pick up the audio from the user’s microphone along with the audio from other participants for a full recording of the meeting?

I think a far better option for extracting audio from video is ffmpeg (https://www.ffmpeg.org/). It’s free and open source, and it is also the engine behind most GUI based utilities. Instead of installing yet another gui app you can just download and unzip ffmpeg. The command line to extract the audio is

ffmpeg -i video.mp4 audio.mp3

In fact, using just the basic command line with no options (there are hundreds, most not needed for casual use) you can  convert between just about any video format. ffmpeg determines which codecs to use based on the file extension. You can even use ffmpeg to convert between subtitle formats as in

ffmpeg -i subtitle.sub subtitle.srt

As for recording audio I highly recommend audacity (https://www.audacityteam.org/). Also free.

I did download and try out AutoAudioRecorder.  However, results weren’t great (plus had issues with my USB DAC, which is set to a much higher sample rate).  If you are looking to grab better quality music audio, would recommend Audacity instead.

The best one is ApowerRec.

You can record the sound of your PC and also the auxiliary input and you can

also record your screen (video).

Audacity! Been using it for over a decade. Free. IDK how any general purpose audio software can be more simple and still be so versatile and loaded with professional features. Very easy to use. Just try it.  Or, maybe MS built-in “GAME BAR” – I think you can choose to record audio & video, or just audio…

I cannot get this to work at all with MP3:

Unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click
Continue, the application will ignore this emor and attempt to continue. If
you click Quit, the application will close immediately.
Unsupported Sample Rate 192000
Parameter name: format.

The maker has no idea. MP3 options have no effect.

I can get WAV easily enough, but auto-start of recording never does work. I have to click the red button top left to start.
(Win11 Pro, 23H2, up to date except for July)

Any thoughts? Audacity has no trouble.

Open Audacity and select Edit > Preferences.

Select the Libraries item and ensure it shows an MP3 Library version.

If it doesn’t, click Download to install it.

Select the Quality item and change the Default Sample Rate: to 4800 Hz.

Try using MP3 again.

but Quality appears elsewhere with the rates (v 3.5.1, current):

– was 44100 (not something I have changed, I think)

Thanks, Deanna! This worked great for me recording to MP3 on Windows 7. I like the simplicity of it.

FYI: It’s not specified in the OP, but checking the Loop Recording feature will create a new MP3 file if the requisite silence is detected.

Thanks for sharing this resource, Deanna. I was happy to see the latest version of Snipping Tool on Windows 11 allows for this, in a way. It will “snip” video and audio.

As of 08-12-2024, opening AutoAudioRecorder results in a dialogue box asking the user to update to the “Pro” version.  Selecting “Cancel” results in the application closing.  It appears that the “free” version is no more?

And is it for a perpetual or annual license?
