Automatic numbering in a foreign language

Whenever I create a numbered list with the words “One,” “Two,” etc., word automatically translates the numbers into those of the language I am using (e.g., “Un,” “Deux,” etc., for French). However, for Arabic, the numbers remain in English. Word recognizes that the language I am typing in is Arabic, because the language is indicated as Arabic on the information bar at the bottom of Word. Nonetheless, it is not allowing the numbers to be translated into Arabic.

I have the Arabic keyboard installed.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Although you can set text to any language, most versions of Microsoft Office support only a limited set of languages. In my version of Word, I can set the language to Estonian for example, and the status bar will display Estonian, but I can’t perform spell checking in Estonian or display Estonian numbering; I’d need to install support for additional languages in order to do that. Have you installed support for Arabic?

I do not believe I have. Usually, Word prompts me to insert the CD-ROM if some feature is not installed. I then install it and Word takes care of the rest. How would I install the Arabic language features? What would I do after I insert the CD-ROM?

Which language version of MS Office do you have? The English version of Office comes with support for English, French and Spanish. For other languages, you need to buy and install a language pack.

I have the English language version of MS Office.

Do you know where I can purchase it from or the cost? I tried searching on Google and found this link, which states, “For more information about how to purchase MLP pack please contact your subsidiary by choosing your country and the nearest subsidiary from this link:
http://www.microsoft.com/worldwide/region….n=Africa,” but then when I followed that link, it wouldn’t give me contact information unless I said I was a resident of the Middle East or Africa.

I have no idea whether Microsoft still sells add-ons for Office 2003, but it they do, you should be able to get them through Microsoft USA, not through its Middle Eastern or African subsidiary.

I searched around and couldn’t find the MUI or MLP for sale. Can you try phoning Microsoft’s sales department?

I just called the Microsoft Office and they do NOT sell the Multi-language pack for Office 2003. They ONLY sell it for 2007. And furthermore, Microsoft Office Online offers JUST Arabic for Office 2007 $24.95 at http://buy.trymicrosoftoffice.com/buyusa/p…p;culture=en-US.

Which means that, if I don’t find the Multilanguage Pack from SOMEWHERE, I will have to switch over to Office 2007 if I want to use Arabic. If anyone reads this message and finds the Multi-language pack for Office 2003 anywhere please let me know or if you know anyone who has it and is willing to sell it to me, please let me know.

I went to IDownloadAll.com and got a lifetime membership, because they claimed that they had the Office 2003 Multilanguage Pack on their web site. After I became a member, I got an email with a .ru extension in the domain. That did not inspire my confidence, but I nonetheless went forward. I first tried downloading the language pack by using the 360 SharePro interface, but I twice got files that Norton recognized as threats. I then tried downloading a file that was supposedly the language pack by using the UTorrent interface, but windows did not recognize the file and had to search online for a program to open it with. I will cancel membership.

It looks like my only options now are to work with Arabic without having the language pack installed or to upgrade to Office 2007, whose language pack is available from Microsoft. I hope to find a way to avoid relearning Word, Excel, Outlook, etc., on Office 2007, and if it is possible to continue working on the 2003 system without upgrading, I want to.

Hans, are you sure that the only solution would be to add the Arabic language pack?

Would the problem be solved by selecting Arabic as current language for non-Unicode programs under the Administrative Tab of the Regional and Language Options dialogue? I was going to set that as an option, but the system warned me that all of my customized changes to normal would be lost. I was thinking of saving my current normal as Normal2.dot and then replacing the default Normal.dot with Normal2.dot should I ever need to restore my customized changes.

I don’t know much about language packs, I don’t use any myself. You could indeed make a backup copy of Normal.dot and experiment.

Actually, I tried fiddling around with the document and got the numbering system to work without selecting Arabic as current language for non-Unicode programs. I was also able to get changes to the normal style to apply to Arabic. Previous to today, my changes to normal, heading 1, and other styles would only apply to the letters in English. The Arabic letters would remain the same. However, when I set these styles to automatically update, changes I made to them were reflected in ALL of the text assigned to them, whether the text was written in English or Arabic.

So I’m going to hold off upgrading to Office 2007 and installing the language pack for now.
