Am I correct in that if I use Autosave I must use the cloud?  If so, I’ll just set an alarm for myself to do it locally.

No. You can select where the Autosave (called AutoRecover) files are save…locally on your PC or in the cloud. The setting for each Office app is on the Save tab of the Options for that app as shown in the screenshot below for Word Options (all locations in that screenshot masked for security reasons).

No. You can select where the Autosave (called AutoRecover) files are save…locally on your PC or in the cloud.

Autosave is not the same thing as Autorecover:

AutoSave only applies to Microsoft 365 files stored in OneDrive, but the Microsoft 365 AutoRecover feature is on by default and saves your work every 10 minutes.

How do I turn on AutoSave? — Can I AutoSave to my computer?

Word takes different actions to protect your changes in Word documents:

If Word opens a document from SharePoint or OneDrive, the program uses AutoSave to save changes to the “cloud” document. We recommend that you leave the AutoSave feature set to On. Image shows the AutoSave option in the On position.

If Word opens a document from your local disk or network shared folder, Word uses AutoRecover to save changes to an AutoRecover file. We recommend that you leave the AutoRecover feature set to On, and set the AutoRecover save interval to five minutes or less.

How to recover unsaved Word documents

AutoSave is a new feature available in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint for Microsoft 365 subscribers that saves your file automatically, every few seconds, as you work.

AutoSave is enabled by default in Microsoft 365 when a file is stored on OneDrive, OneDrive for Business, or SharePoint Online.

Thanks. I did not know about that function for 365 and OneDrive as I don’t use them. Appears that the AutoSave functions like the AutoRecover.
