I was notified of this last night.  I did a 2 year renewal about 2 months ago and they refuse any kind of refund.  AVOID AVAST!!

It’s not as bad as it may seem, though of course it’s not a great development: the change affects an Avast browser extension that gives a visual evaluation of Web pages before the user clicks on their links. If the user clicks on a link, Firefox will apparently still enjoy other Avast protections.

The change is also being reported on the Avast website here and by users on the Avast forum here.

Thanks for the clarification! Based upon what I read at both of the links, it sounds to me as if Avast had telemetry about the extension that mirrored what DavidR said of his own experience with the extension in his first post on the Avast forum thread.
