I just read the latest Top Story article How to Back Up Your Microsoft Outlook PST File by [/COLOR]Lance Whitney

What are the advantages to using the backup tools he describes over simply copying the pst file to a backup drive? Or relying on the pst file which would be in a typical system backup?

One advantage might be that the backup tools probably make use of the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), which enables copying while Outlook, and thus the PST file, is open.

Otherwise you would have to close Outlook to perform a backup of the PST.

I was under the impression that my weekly System Image backup and my continual running of File History took care of backing up the PST. Is this NOT the case?

Yes it is the case although FH will not back up files in use. So, the PST will only be backed up if Outlook is not running.

Your PST file(s) will be backed up if you do a full backup of your hard drive. The fact that you call it a “System Image backup” tells me that it is, in fact, a full backup of your hard drive. That is, unless the PST file(s) is stored on a different drive than the one being backed up.

As far as File History, make sure that the folder(s) containing your PST file(s) is included in the File History backup list. If it isn’t, then File History won’t ever back up your PST file(s).

Here is helpful information about how to configure File History:

Another reason to use a 3rd party backup – files in use are backed up.
