Deficiency, I’d say – I didn’t think you could backup to CD…

Well, it is possible, but may depend upon the software that the cdrw burner uses Direct CD Format Utility by Roxio.

My results were mixed (see old post 298265; test was on a small dataset, certainly not larger than the CD-R’s capacity).

Hi – I’m confused. I followed the link in this thread to MS’s KB – which said no backup to optical drive. This I find disappointing! Yet others in this thread appear to have had success! I want to backup files to DVD+R, but the MS backup utility says no with a blank.DVD+R loaded. But, if I use a DVD which has been partially burnt, I can browse to the DVD. Hence, I thought I’d follow the advice offered in post 298265, but I don’t get the “new” option when I right-click the CD/DVD drive in Explorer. (I am using XP Pro, not Home, so perhaps this is the reason?). Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

Your best option is to invest in thrid party backup software. It will be much more fully featured and capable than the MS backup. You can search the lounge for more information on backup solutions. Acronis True Image seems to be a favorite fo several people.

I am unable to get MSBackup to write a file larger than the capacity of the CD.
Other backup utilities promp for the next media. MSBackup gives an error message when it reaches the CD capacity.

Is there a fix to this or is it a MSBackup deficiency?
