I’m helping my granddaughter–a high school freshman–with a PowerPoint presentation. One slide has a list of 16 bullet items that I inserted from a Word document, then broke into two columns. Strange thing, though–PowerPoint broke the list into uneven columns. The first column has nine items, the second column just seven. All items are single-line. It seems to me a very simple matter to move the last item in the first column to the top of the second column, and that would leave exactly eight items in each column.

I’ve tried making the text box shorter, but that doesn’t work. Now, if I elongate the box, don’t you know that items in the second column start spilling back to the bottom of the first column! When I “squeeze” the bottom of the box upward, however, I can’t get that ninth item to move to the top of the second column. This doesn’t make sense to me. What have I overlooked?

Making the box shorter should work but I would use a two content layout (Home > Layouts) and paste eight items into the second placeholder.

Well, the answer turned out to be incredibly simple. An invisible blank line was sitting at the bottom of the second column. Deleting the blank line set things right. (My thanks to Mr. Steve Rindsberg, a Microsoft MVP.)
