Bandwidth test does not refer to the width of the band on the football field, but this is a forum where links and trivia and irresistible moose are to be found, and I wondered if anyone could provide a link (or several) that might challenge the bandwidth of a new and alledgely very fast modem. I’ll find out soon enough anyway, but streaming video or multimedia might be a good quick test. (Not Wagner’s Ring Cycle in its entirety, please.)

Google Earth appears to be pretty good. See how long it takes to sharpen the images.

I generally use one of the various speed test web sites. These use large files that are not compressible and will test both your download and your upload speed. You can usually select the city or area where the testing will be done from.

My favorite test site is SpeedTest.Net which displays a map showing the name and location of the recommended test server. The map also shows about 50 other test sites throughout the US and 100-200 test sites throughout the world. A speed test takes less than 30 seconds. At the end of the test, you will see the download and upload speed, the distance to the test server, the name of your ISP and how your test speed compares to the average for that ISP. There is also a link to PingTest.Net which will test your line quality as well.

To see other test sites, just google “speed test”

      Hope this helps,
      Bill

Some Internet Security products seem to buffer data in their firewall, and those speed tests which pay more attention to “top speed” than the average speed (Speedtest – I’m talking about you!) can then give ludicrous results. My highest download speed from Speedtest is 38 Mbps – on a max 10 Mbps cable line!

Fior the UK, the best-regarded speed test is from ThinkBroadband. They do two variants, one requiring Java Runtime Environment and one Flash.

Plethora means a lot to me.

Do you know how to optimize your internet connection? (there are at least 71 parameters to set)

Even most computer tech’s can’t do that. But there are programs that CAN.

One program that I’ve learned to trust is “AVG Tune-Up”.
It has several apps to clean up your PC, but the one app that I’d pay for (again) is the internet connection app.
      It really works!

      Cheers Mates!
