I have created a simple bar chart using the chart wizard. The chart has 20 bars (i.e., timekeepers) with a zero base line in the middle and each bar is either above zero or below depending on if the timekeeper is above or below budget. The chart would be more user friendly if I could display the same axis on both the left and right sides of the graph….EXCEL has the left one by default…I have looked through all the chart options but can’t seem to find how to display both a left and right axis (i.e., duplicate the left axis on the right of the chart)….I have to be missing the obvious, but after several hours decided to crawl into the lounge for help…thanks.

You need (at least) two series to be able to have a secondary value axis. You don’t want two different series, so we’ll use the existing one twice.
      – Click on the chart to select it.
      – Select Chart | Source Data…
      – Activate the Series tab.
      – Copy the range address in the Values box to the clipboard
      – Click Add.
      – Paste the range address into the Values box.
      – Click OK. You now have two identical series side by side.
      – Click on the first series to select it.
      – Select Format | Selected Data Series…
      – Activate the Axis tab.
      – Click on Secondary Axis.
      – Click OK.

        Hans,
Thanks for the feedback…I get through the instructions and add the second identical data range…but when I go to the axis tab, I don’t have a selection for a secondary axis…The original EXCEL graph is attached for reference. THANKS.

Make sure you have selected one of your data series before trying to change the axis. If you are trying to format the entire chart, the secondary axis option won’t be available to you.

You haven’t added a 2nd range to the chart.

How about this example? Is this what you are after.

In addition to Hans’ instructions, I removed the datalabels from the second range and changed the fill and outline to nothing so it wouldn’t plot. I also changed the color of the sec axis to yellow.

            Steve,
Thanks, this is perfect…I had added the second range to the chart, but then ended up with two columns for each timekeeper. So I thought that I had screwed up Hans’ instructions and was lost. Neat trick to “hide” the data labels and bars by changing the color/lines to nothing for the second series….hadn’t seen these selections before now….again, thank you very much!
            Take care.
