      I read the article. How would some one like me who has Windows7, FireFox 15.0.1 remove JAVA from my system with it achieving fire and smoke. Thanks.

      @Dennis

      I’m going to have a Windows Secrets Newsletter column on exactly that topic, in about two weeks.

      Perhaps in the article, could you run down some common applications which need Java or parts of Java, and list any major damages which might occur in program features and function? Programs like OpenOffice. Just brief mentions, not major writeups.

      Saw the link for LibreOffice in the article, but still I don’t know whether anything I use in Writer, Calc or their Save to PDF will break.

      The bottom line for LibreOffice is, they say they are moving to phase out Java dependencies in their suite. I say, the sooner, the better!

      Good riddance to client side Java. I’ve gotten along without it for years.

      But then, I also surf using Firefox without Flash – better security, fewer ads, less updating hassle. And when I really need to watch some videa, I launch IE or Chrome for a quick look.

      Looks like no more Text Twist for me. I’ve been looking for an excuse to wean myself off it for a while now.

      @RC –

      I intend to do that. Any suggestions?

      Also, re: your article, maybe how it can be easily temporarily disabled in case one finds they need it. For example, some Canadian Government sites that we use, required Java at one time, and I am not sure if that is still true.

      On that note, would just changing the file extension from .exe to something like .exedead work?

      The best solution I’ve seen is to use multiple browsers, and have Java enabled in only one of them. Preferably use Chrome with Java enabled, because it (a) notifies and asks for permission and (b) may or may not have a better sandbox.

      That’s the essence of what I’m going to be writing for Windows Secrets Newsletter.

      Woody, how do you check Chrome to see whether Java is enabled or not? How do you un-enable Java in Firefox?

    • #55404

      @Tom

      I should be covering these and more in the Windows Secrets Newsletter article next week.

      Again in these comments, I think I’m seeing references to “Java” in various browsers. Are these really instances of Java , or are folks here still confusing Jabascript with JAva (Runtimes). Enabling or disabling Javascript in a browser has nothing whatsoever to do with using or not using Java Runtimes!

      @Woody

      As far as I know, I have only one program on my computers which is truly Java dependent, and that is LibreOffice. And that, only because I used to have Office 95 on one of my computers, and I never converted the resulting Access 95 databases into something more modern.

      It’s kind of like I use (and like) Paint .NET, but without that one program, I could probably ditch .NET Framework altogether.

      I’m guessing quite a few folks only use Java or .NET for one or two programs, and even there, for only a limited set of features.

      And to be clear, I’m talking about Java Runtimes, not wesite Java Applets, and certainly not Javascript.

      I’m in pretty much the same boat, although I don’t use LibreOffice. Once in a blue moon there will be a site that still requires Java, but those are going the way of the dodo…
