I just went to gatesnotes.com, Bill Gates’ personal blog. I went to the sign-up screen to create a login account. I didn’t want to log in with a social media account, so I chose “sign up with email”.

However, you cannot create an email-based login account without entering your physical address! And not just your city, state, and country, but your STREET ADDRESS!

No thank you, Bill. I don’t need your thoughts and opinions that bad.

This is where I believe that being connected has driven us apart as a culture. I agree with your sense of caution MrJimPhelps. Once five pieces of identity information are tied together they become a single piece of information that is very specific.

But I also remember a time when we would gladly subscribe to newspapers, magazines, and newsletters without concern about exposure. “I’m in the book,” was an easy thing to say to a new acquaintance. You knew they would have the information to call you later for more interaction. Nuisance contacts were few. You might even feel nervous making contact out of respect for the other person’s privacy. The world has changed. I miss it.

At least you were not being fooled with the promise of Bill Gates giving you one thousand dollars for the address.
