What’s going on with Microsoft’s sites? I cannot reach Bing, Outlook, Xbox Live and other related sites for several days now! Unable to even activate Microsoft 365!

      David,

I just managed to sign in to both Office 365 and One Drive accounts.

      Maybe problem with your ISP?
      Have you tried different browsers?
Have you rebooted your modem and/or router and then computer?

May the Forces of good computing be with you!

      Now this is just STRANGE!!!

I opened up Express VPN making it look like I was loging in from New Jersey and everything works!!

Must be some trouble between MS and Virginia??

      SPOOKY!

        A couple of pointers:

You are not logged in with this post (see “Guest” under Avatar). Guests have to be moderated, logged in Users do not. So you are posted quicker if you log in.

VPNs hide the origin IP address, so they are exploited by those with nefarious intentions. Websites on the Internet have Firewalls and Spam Filters to prevent the exploitation. They use are blacklists of misused IP addresses to block abuse.
When you use your VPN, you should check that the IP address your have been given by the VPN is not blacklisted.  You can find your IP at https://db-ip.com/all – it will appear in the box at the upper right. You can check for blacklisting at StopForumSpam and CleanTalk by entering that IP and searching.
If the IP is problematic, you can get another one from the VPN provider.

PRKano – Thanks! You provided a wealth of information but failed to answer the question. I think you also failed to READ my reply above saying that all sites work while using the VPN.

Also – thanks for reminding me to login in to this site when asking/replying.

Please try again if you think you have a real answer this time.

Sorry, can’t help you with the Microsoft issues. I don’t have an MS ID, or use any of those services. I run Windows VMs on my Macs to be able to answer questions about the OS.

Are you connected to your ISP’s router?

At a command prompt type in ipconfig /all

Is your DNS settings set up correctly?  I would also reboot your router.  When you connect via vpn, you bypass the IP/DNS settings of your local ISP.

Thanks but you are also missing the point. Again – and for the last time – Sites such as bing.com and outlook.com and some others cannot be found unless I activate the VPN. All other sites everywhere work fine with and without VPN.

This began happening a few days ago with no changes to anything here. It is NOT my configuration or system settings or hardware.

        • #2598821

Yet no one has a problem except you.

And you’ve ignored four questions and two pieces of advice.

        • #2598834

You may not have changed something, but your ISP may have.

I didn’t ignore what you said, I’m explaining why it’s working when you use the VPN.

Start by rebooting your router first.  Your ISP will ask you to try that first anyway.  If that doesn’t clear it out , then call the support department of your ISP.

Those services are not down. If they were, I’d be confirming your information.  I just logged into all of those services.

        Whois IP 73.12.76.232

        Call Comcast.

In the meantime you never answered my question which is the basic troubleshooting step when dealing with network oddities.  So how about we answer some basic questions about the setup of your connection.

At a command line type in ipconfig /all

        Give me the results.

That’s standard comcast (I have it here as well).

Type in ping outlook.com and what IP addresses do you get back?

I have done all that several times. Since I have access to those sites via VPN I am dropping the issue.

If my configurations and such were off then no site – not even the VPN – would work.

Things might clear up on their own – or not.

    • #2598843

My response has been blocked as maybe being bad.

      I am done.

        I’m not giving up yet.

We need a tracert and a ping

Please answer the question, in the meantime I’ll check if a post ended up in spam.

I’m not seeing any post being flagged as spam.  If the site won’t let you post a command window response, then do a screen shot.

You also didn’t indicate what browser this is occurring in and if you’ve tried another browser

browser – I can’t access any Microsoft website. Other sites work fine – Super User

I had an issue the other day where Edge wouldn’t launch and it turned out on the computer I was working on, McAfee had caused the computer to launch into a temp user profile and I had to take ownership of the real user profile to get logged back into the computer.  I also ripped out McAffee antivirus. Until I did, I couldn’t launch the Edge browser.

So let’s rule out Internet connection issues and then start looking at security stack software that may have impacted Edge specifically.  Can you get to Outlook.com on Chrome or Firefox?

      This is my final response:

Browser makes no difference. Tried Chrome, Edge, Brave, and even DuckDuckGo.

Also, just to verify good config here I did a complete fresh re-install of Window 11 2h2 – loaded all updates, etc with same results.

Maybe I can address this again tomorrow evening – no more tonight.

      Goodnight.

      Thanks!

@David Burke I feel your pain. Had this happen to a client recently with their bank. The bank couldn’t figure it out until I had them send the info I tracked to their CDN provider. They didn’t understand that although the client could access their main page, once logged in they were using a CDN provider to provide the content of their account.

Had it happen to me last week with a security site I frequently visit and it was due to the automated DDOS block and I happened to hit at same time.

Without the VPN, go to https://www.whatismyip.com/ Copy your public IP then use your VPN to raise the issue with MS giving them that IP (good luck). We’ve had it occur on our servers with Spectrum, Comcast and more.

It may time out and “fix itself” by tomorrow. Good luck!
