We have a weird situation happening.

We are preparing to upgrade to Office 2003 from Office 2000. There will be some cases in which Outlook will be set up so it doesn’t use Cached Exchange Mode. When Outlook is set up like this, Outlook is blocking attachments that we’ve deemed okay using the Outlook Security Settings public folder.

When Outlook is using Cached Exchange Mode, the attachments are not blocked. And also in Outlook 2000, attachments are not blocked either.

Exchange 2003 is our server. I believe it’s a permissions thing on the Public Folders object, but I’m not sure at what level they need to be given Read permissions. On the Outlook Security Settings public folder itself, the Default is Reviewer.

    Anyone know?

I’m afraid I do not know what you are talkign about when you refer to the “Outlook Sercurity Settings Public Folder.” I don’t believe I have such a thing on my Exchange 203 server. As far as i know, attachment blocking is done entirely in Outlook. I don’t know offhand of any differences between cached and online mode for this, except that the anti-spam functions only work in one of the modes (a puzzling defect which caused us to bail on it pretty much immediately).

We use a freeware program that allows us to specify which attachment extensions are “Level 1” and which are “Level 2” . It installs itself as a the “Attachment Security & Options” tab in Tools.. Options.

I think the name is “Slovak Attachment Options”

I think I figured out what was wrong. With Outlook 2002 and beyond there is a new Outlook Security settings form to use and publish to the Outlook SEcurity Settings public folder. The one we deployed with Outlook 2000 is out of date.

I implemented the new security form on a test network with a test Exchange server and Outlook 2003 and the attachments were not blocked whether I was in cached mode or not.

          Sarah,
Thanks for posting the solution. That will most likely save someone (probably me) a headache later.
