I have installed the registry key workaround that is supposed to stop the taskbar search bar from going to the web, on both a Windows 10 (22H2) and a Windows 11 (24H2) machine and it doesn’t work.  I keyed it in manually and used a registry insertion, and neither worked on either machine.  Both still go to the web using Edge and (barf…) Bing.

This is the key & info that I installed in both machines:

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Explorer]
    “DisableSearchBoxSuggestions”=dword:00000001

Any suggestions for how to make this work or why it doesn’t on my machines?

      Henry,

      Try setting these three items:
      DisableWebSearch

If you don’t want to do them manually you can download my PowerShell program:
CMsStdSettingsForm.ps1 from my shared OneDrive folder.

Note: You’ll actually download the CMsStdSettingsForm.zip file.

Be sure to read the help at the beginning of the file.

You can also use the PowerShell command: Get-Help d:\path\CMsStdSettingsForm.ps1 command to read the file.

Thankyou RG!  I have downloaded the file, and I’ll try it out, but not tonight.  Will it work on Win 10, too?

RG: I really don’t understand how to use your power shell file.  Maybe it’s overkill for what I was looking for?

In your message above you mentioned “setting 3 items”, but it’s not clear to me which 3 items you are referring to (in the registry, I get that).  Did you mean the 3 items within HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Search and that they should all be set to zero (0)?  I just looked and my registry does not even have “AllowCortona” or “EnableDynamicContentWSB”.

        thanks!

      Henry W,

      RetiredGeek has good suggestions.

If you like you could also check out the free app WizFile.

I’ve used it for years. You can search across multiple drives, use wildcards and it’s very fast. When you find what you want, a right click offers a lot of options including “explorer folder” via windows file explorer.

      You put it under explorer.

Hmmm. what you did should work. Do you have any other third party explorer menu items at play?
