Should have done my research first – I foolishly expected that these things would be simple.

I purchased a BlueTake USB Bluetooth dongle via the Net and quickly found that I need to register and upgrade from the supplied CD software to Bluetooth Stack version 4.00.35© for XPSP2. However, even after uninstalling the software, cleaning the Registry with RegSeeker, and reinstalling, nothing is working. There’s not even a light when I plug the device into the port , which makes me suspect the physical device is faulty OOB. The Bluetake Manuals are woefully devoid of technical or hardware troubleshooting information. My question to BlueTake support is yet unanswered.

The few net references I found were not encouraging:

One thing that puzzles me is that XPSP2 is supposed to have native BT Drivers, but my Dull Laptop isn’t loaded with any that I can recognize.

    Any ideas?

      John,
First, are you sure the port is working OK? Second, any OEM can customize XP the way they want. So, maybe there was no BT stuff in the install. Is there a BT control panel applet? Have a look at How to troubleshoot Bluetooth detection and connectivity problems in Windows XP Service Pack 2 & other links from install bluetooth drivers XP SP-2 – Google Search.

The USB port works OK with my flashdrive.

There is NO BT Contol Panel applet at all, and getting one is part of the problem! I have so far been unable to find the generic MS XP SP2 drivers, or Widcomm drivers, to install in the first place. All the net advice is to install the OEM drivers … I’ve done that and nothing goes live. Have I missed something?

I did find a more recent set of drivers from the Toshiba Germany website, I’ll see what happens when I intall those.

I have been to that KB, a number of others, and a number of the links in the Google search (and several other sites). Next step is to plough through this thread: http://www.symbianos.org/yabbse/index.php?…ay;threadid=239%5B/url%5D which mentions some driver names and old sources for the SP2 drivers, so I’ll start scouting for them.

Edit: also some good info at BTPCHeadsets – the screen text and steps for my install is identical except for the graphics.

        But it isn’t working yet!

I would try it in another computer – it seems to me the LED should light to show it is receiving power. Even if XP does not recognize the device, it should still see that new HW has been installed. I think your dongle done danged!

Thanks, Bill. I have pretty much come to both conclusions- try it on another PC which has a BT Stack loaded (but I dunno where to find one – BT is not yet commonplace on PCs). And if I get nothing, the hardware is defective.

(In the meantime I also downloaded and installed WIDCOMM BT drivers, but they also tell me there’s no BT device available.)

Simple question to anyone who uses a USB BT dongle: does it light up as soon as it’s plugged in, or only while communicating?

        Appears I have defective device.

I thought I would share the fractured English response I got from the manufacturer, AFTER I whilelisted the domain because the message has a Taiwanese IP address which my spam filters blocked:

End of story, almost two years later: the device was not defective, but the drivers were not XP MCE compatible.

          > I did find a more recent set of drivers from the Toshiba Germany website …

The initial set of Toshiba drivers didn’t solve the problem, but in August last year I went back to the Toshiba Germany website, and found v51006T_20070314, installed them and found they work.

So now I can listen to iTunes on my Jabra BT620s headset sans wires, but have to be careful about shutting down iTunes before disconnecting the BT connection, else the PC locks up.
