Twice during the last year or so my HP laptop computer with a single solid-state drive has displayed the following message:

    Boot Device Not Found
Please install an operating system on your hard disk.
    Hard disk – (3FO)
    F2 System Diagnostics
For more information, please visit http://www.hp.com/go/techcenter/startup

In both instances I restarted the computer by pressing the on/off button and the computer booted up normally.

Is the above message an indication that the solid-state drive may fail soon?

It’s telling you something is not happy, but it fires up OK a second time so I wouldn’t worry too much.

You should already be backing up to an external USB disk and running disk monitoring software (CrystalDiskInfo etc). The monitoring software will tell you if your disk is short on life, but it won’t prevent sudden failure.

If you fancy delving onto your PC you could clean out the dust with a vacuum and reseat the disk / controller / cable.

      cheers, Paul

Paul T – I make monthly disk images with the free version of Macrium Reflect 7 but am not using any sort of disk monitoring software. Thanks for that idea.

Opening up the back of this laptop looks to be a bit tricky. I don’t think I will try opening it unless the disk or something else fails. The hard drive and most of the other components of my previous HP laptop were easily accessible without the use of any tools.

My daughter has an HP laptop that just started showing this same message, but now her machine will not boot at all.  BIOS errors.  Cannot access BIOS at all.  It began after she started to unencrypt her Bitlocker encrypted boot drive.

      I’m working on it…

      Desktop mobo Asus TUF X299 Mark 1, CPU: Intel Core i7-7820X Skylake-X 8-Core 3.6 GHz, RAM: 32GB, GPU: Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti 4GB. Display: Four 27" 1080p screens 2 over 2 quad.
