repost, with os info;
I use win95, had a registry problem which I couldn’t solve, and tried to use drive image to restore earlier settings. but something went wrong with booting and partitions. I have two hard disks, I used to only boot from the newest and biggest one. Now my c drive is on the older hd, with an empty, unallocated space in the beginning of the newer, where c was (the first drive on the older hd was d, no windows file there). What can I do to have my c-drive on my newest disk, so that I can install there my drive image?
The new hd is 20 giga, with logical extensions (those are still OK). The old hd is 4 giga, with one logical extension. Please help, Marc

Use your Win 95 boot diskettes to get to a DoS prompt. Use Fdisk to re-create a primary DoS partition on your newer drive, then Format /s. Re-install the OS to this. This pre-supposes you have backed up the data on the drive first. If not you’ll lose it all.

First of all, it’s very important how your hard drives connected: which is primary master and which is slave (for IDE drives) or which has ID0 (SCSI). Usually Primary Master or ID0 drives have C: partition; make C: partition on other drives require to install special boot partition on Primary Master drive.
Check jumper setting on your newer drive: it must be “master” or “0”(for SCSI). On your older drive jumpers can be set on “slave” or “cable select” either, or ID1, ID2… for SCSI. Then you can use FDISK, Partition Magic or similar program to create first bootable primary partition (don’t forget to make it active) and copy system files on it (FORMAT /S or format, then SYS C: ). Or you can restore image of your drive, then resize it using Partition Magic or similar program.

Not sure if that was for my benefit, but thanks anyway. I doubt very much he has his drives set wrongly. In my experience if you don’t have the IDE slot devices configured correctly, you won’t get past the POST.

What that space represents is a minimum size partition for the primary partition on that disk. It will be about 8MB, the balance of the drive has been consumed by the Extended Partition. In which you have logical drives.

The simplest way to fix the problem is to unplug the 4GB drive, make sure the 20GB is master and fdisk it so that there are no partitions. Create you primary boot partition and extended drives as you wish.

Make it bootable and boot the system.

Next, reconnect the old 4GB drive as slave and boot from floppy. Fdisk will see the 4GB drive as second disk except the drive letters will be:
#
#20GB C
#4GB D
#20GB Ext Part
#20GB Log Drv
#4GB Ext Part
#4GB Log Drv

I assume that the drive image software is on the 4GB drive?

If it is then you should create a single boot partition of 20GB and image that. You can use a partition resizer later if 20GB boot partition is excessive.

I have found that imaging works best on a RAW drive and no extended partitions.
