    I have been using the same scanner for almost 12 years with no problems what so ever. The other day, I turned the computer on, and it was froze at the BIOS screen with no options what so ever so I rebooted and started removing hardware and the scanner was the first thing I removed and all is well. I tried reinstalling the drivers for the scanner and plugging it into different USB ports but causes the computer to lock up. I know I should move on and get another scanner, but if there’s something I could do in the mean time to get a little more life out of it I would appreciate suggestions. Thank you.

      Reinstalling the drivers might not be enough, try removing all the drivers and uninstalling the scanner from device manager.
      Also, check device manager’s hidden settings to ensure that those relating to the device are also removed, if present.

      USB type scanners;
      Ensure that if the scanner has it’s own USB ports, remove any USB thumb drive if present, they
      can cause boot issues as well. If not the actual cause here.
