I am using Windows 98 on a laptop, Dell Inspiron 7000. A while back, while trying to set up cable modem service, I “accidentally” somehow tried to install drivers for Netware, which I do not need. Has something to do with network and adapters and making the NIC card talk. Tried to uninstall the networking stuff for Netware, but now when I boot up the computer, it always hangs up waiting for a vnetware.386 device driver. A message says this was referred to somewhere either in the System.ini or windows registry. I have tried searching for anything with vnetware in both and have never seen this file or driver referred to.

The boot sequence always then waits until I hit another key to proceed. Can someone tell me how I can get the computer to quit looking for this driver. Under Control Panel–Network, I have, to my knowledge, uninstalled everything dealing with Netware so not sure why this issue still persists.

Go to START, RUN, type in MSCONFIG , select the STARTUP tab, then clear the check box for the program you don’t want to run.

How do I uninstall a program that is not showing in the Control Panel Add/remove Prog list, but is in the MSconfig startup? I have unticked the program so it does not run, but how do I get rid of it?

This requires going into the registry and deleting the keys for the program(s) to want to remove when they are not shown in the Add/Remove programs selections in the control panel. Be sure to back up the registry before doing this. Make copies of user.dat and system.dat first.
Go into the registry from the START>RUN, REGEDIT.
Search down to HK LOCAL MACHINESOFTWARECLASSESMICROSOFTWINDOWSCURRENT VERSION.
Look for RUN, RUNONCE, RUN SERVICES.
Examine the keys on the right side pane to locate the program to want to delete.
Be Careful! Make sure you have the right program. Right click and choose delete.

I have tried this but can’t seem to find out which program refers to the file vnetware.386. I saw a section called something like [386Enh] but think that is supposed to be there. Any ideas on what program or kind of program this would be related to?

I’d bet that the activation of the .386 program you’re looking for is either in the SYSTEM.INI or WIN.INI file. While you’re in MSCONFIG, look in those files. You may have to expand that [386 Enh] area to see the entry you’re looking for.

Thats a good idea Al, I could not find the program I wanted to delete either, figured I was out of my league and gave up. Will have another look in msconfig and expand – see what I can find. Thank you yet again.

Hi Cyberdance:
Just to clarify something. Your original question was how to uninstall a program that wasn’t listed in Add/Remove. That’s different than eliminating it from the startup menu. Deleting the entries under the Run & Run- keys mentioned will remove it from the Startup menu (whether checked or unchecked) but doesn’t uninstall it.

To uninstall, you should look under Program Files (or wherever it was installed) & see if there’s an uninstall program that comes with your app. If not, search the registry for the program (& manufacturer name). Some programs don’t make registry changes & can be uninstalled by deleting the files.

Hi Phil, you are quite right, I was unable to uninstall programs by using the registry Run keys, all that did was, as you say, remove them from startup. The first thing I did when unable to locate the uninstall under add/remove, was to locate the program under Program files hoping it came with a self uninstall, most did. I was reluctant to play around in the registry (being a novice) but tried on an old unused machine, deleting programs from the registry – which certainly worked. So thank you for the clarification Phil. Appreciate it.
