Per your advice in a previous thread Woody I upgraded WLM from 2009 to 2012 and although I don’t plan on installing this patch yet… after manually checking for updates it’s not showing up. Yes, I do have check for updates for other M$ products enabled. Windows 7 (x64) by the way with all “safe” updates installed thru November.

NOTE: Anybody planning to upgrade their Windows Live Mail program (Windows Live Essentials)… I’d highly advise you to see
what I encountered during my upgrade in the post below and check your own settings after your upgrade!

Chances are good you don’t have any @outlook, @hotmail, @live, or @msn email accounts.

      Woody
I am a little confused. I have Windows 7 and under “important changes” I have “check for updates but let choose whether to download and install them” checked. Under “Microsoft Update” I have “Give me updates for Microsoft products and check for new optional Microsoft Software when I update Windows” checked.
Should this be the way to keep the update settings so that Microsoft can’t just update what they want to when they want to on our computers? Or do you think I should uncheck under “Microsoft Update” and not allow them to give me the updates for other Microsoft products.
I am concerned that they will make changes to other settings like they did to me when I updated Skype to the newest version and they changed the “home page” on my Browsers both Firefox and Chrome from what I had them set to to MSN.
I have no Idea what they will change when we try to update our Microsoft Email accounts.

I do Woody, I use WLM solely (and frequently) for my Hotmail account. Apparently you didn’t notice but my Hotmail account is the one I’ve always provided to you here.

I have other accounts configured in Outlook 2010 but Hotmail is the only one configured in WLM.

Those are the setting I recommend. With those settings, Windows Update (actually Microsoft Update) will also check for patches to Office and other Microsoft products.

    • #48221

That’s odd. If you’re sure you’re using the latest version of WLM, and you’re also using a @hotmail account in WLM, you should’ve received the email. If I were you, I’d go ahead and install the patch manually.

      Woody
So then if I understand you correctly leave all the settings the way they are and don’t make any changes.

That’s the best, as I understand it. If there’s someone with a different opinion, please chime in!

It appears there’s a communication issue here Woody and I think it’s at your end this time, but then again maybe not?

I DID receive the email from MS, which is why I contacted you initially because I didn’t know how to get the patch they were suggesting. You advised me to upgrade my version of WLM from 2009 to 2012 when I told you I wasn’t seeing the patch available… which I did.

It’s the PATCH I’m not seeing in Windows update, and your original advice was to upgrade WLM to 2012 but NOT install the patch yet. Per your advice I wasn’t going to install the patch… I just checked to see if it was now available after upgrading WLM to the latest version… and it’s still NOT showing when I check for updates. I do have check for other MS products enabled and I do have a Hotmail account configured in WLM.

That’s the problem with the WLM 2012 update – it doesn’t appear in Windows Update, as best I can tell. It’s in a link from an email sent to people with @outlook.com accounts who are using WLM 2012.

It’s very strange. Microsoft has never done that before, but I believe that’s the way you have to install the patch.

My bad Woody, thanks for clearing that up! I didn’t realize the email was the only source for the patch, I thought it was also available through Windows update.

I apologize for being such a pain but to un-confuse me further are you suggesting that I should install this patch now? You had initially advised me to upgrade WLM to 2012 but NOT install the patch. I believe that advice was based on the information provided by a MS MVP in your InfoWorld article? I see Outlook.com when I log into Hotmail from the web, NOT Outlook Mail (Preview).

Here’s the quote from the MS MVP in your InfoWorld article…
“No Outlook Mail (Preview) accounts = do not install KB3093594.”
“An account has upgraded to Outlook Mail (Preview) = install KB3093594.”

For the record I use WLM on three of my systems for my Hotmail account ONLY. Just one of them has been upgraded to WLM 2012 so far and the other two still have 2009. I’m not experiencing any problems on any of them.

Woody, I’ve never had the “Get updates for other MS products checked”. Should everyone have this checked? Does this give MS the opportunity to change other settings (e.g. the reference to Skype by Sam)? Thank you for your guidance, as always.

    • #48228

If you have Office, it’s a good idea to check the “other updates” box.

    • #48229

You’re right! Wait until you see the whites of their eyes – er, “Outlook Mail (Preview)”. Sorry ’bout that.

    • #48230

      @Woody

I have Access, and I get updates through my Access account.

I turned off “other updates” since Microsoft was sending me bad updates for my printer and video card that wouldn’t install. I have had better success by downloading them from the manufacturer’s website.

    • #48231

Thank you, Woody, for clarifying that for me. Your help is sincerely appreciated. 🙂

    • #48232

      That’s certainly a reasonable approach.

    • #48233

I had forgotten all about this problem and yesterday installed KB3093594, which was included in the general Windows Update.

Since my WLMail 2012 (hooked up to Outlook.com) was working fine and I had seen that support for WLM was being ended I should have excluded this update, however…

Anyway, operating WLMail is now like walking through treacle and the Sent box is behaving peculiarly, i.e. the sent mail is visible online in Outlook.com but not on the desktop in the client.

Even worse, I could not find the update in my Installed Update list to uninstall it!
This is even though it is there in the Update History.

      What have a missed?

      Any help much appreciated!

    • #48234

I’m not sure how to fix it, but I’m seeing the problem in various places. Stay tuned.

    • #48235

Post Script: Here’s a thing. Syn’cing stopped entirely (as reported by one or two others). After a few days, having taken no action (other than setting up Outlook 2010) WLMail started working again… And then it all freezes for some seconds, whether in Outlook or WLMail…

The subtle change in font appearance of the mail subject lines – also reported by at least one other – remained.

    • #48236

Update: mail is sync’ed, with some problems…calendar sync stopped. When a sync is initiated manually it hangs on the calendar.

Subject lines in Archive folder sometimes disappear…
