Browser Page Not Found Error

Hi, not sure which forum is most appropriate for this, but hope this works.

A few weeks ago, I started getting an error when I click on various kinds of hyperlinks in my browsers. This happens in both Firefox and IE. I’ve googled the problem but haven’t been able to find any help.

I’ve attached a screenshot (I hope) to show the error I’m getting. I’ts an IIS error (and yes, I do have IIS installed) and strangely, it shows a local path in the IIS directory as somehow associated with the error.

Of course, this error pops up only on the most important links…. Can anyone tell me what’s going on here?

That seems a link used in adverts. If you only get the error when clicking in adverts, I wouldn’t worry too much about it.

I’m not 100% certain but it looks a lot like the HOSTS file (or other security software) is redirecting that advert URL to 127.0.0.1 (localhost; keeping it internal, blocking access to that site), normally it would result in a page/site not found but, in your case, IIS is intercepting it as a request to the local server.

I would think that there’s a way to setup IIS so that this type of redirect is ignored (if that is what’s happening) but I don’t use IIS.

Why do you say it’s being redirected to localhost? What have I missed?

I don’t think so. Webservers do have c: drives as well, and that’s what it looks like to me – IIS failing on the requested web server.

A quick lookup shows click.linksynergy operates from an Apache webserver:

You have a tab open in Firefox that shows “Bolt Revo…”, which could be Bolt Revolt – an antimalware offering that I’ve not come across before.

It’s a bit of a leap in the dark, but could that application be part of the issue – redirecting what it considers to be a bad site (the clik.linksynergy advert) to 127.0.0.1, which happens to be the local IIS webserver…which would map to c:inetpubwwroot as suggested above?

Attempts to reach the website, at the time of my post, failed, so I really couldn’t check.
