This morning I got the BSOD, I think. Only thing I could do was to hold the power button until shutdown. On restart, I got a notice that a report was being sent to MS. All was well for a couple hours.

I opened a web site and left computer to do something else important. When I came back, I had the attached Blue Screen and had to do the rude shut down again. On restart, I got the attached notice. I could not expand it, so I took pictures of parts of all the information. I don’t know what caused this, but the only thing I have done was to install the update for Flash yesterday morning. So I did a restore to earlier date of Wednesday morning, which reverted Flash to the earlier version. So far, there doesn’t appear to be any more problems.

Is it possible that the latest version of Flash caused this? I don’t know what the information on the Blue Screen means or what the information on the report Notice means. Maybe one of you High Tech guys can translate and inform this dummy what is going on here

Machine is a HP G62 laptop running Win 7 SP1 64 bit with Intel Pentium processor 500gb HDD, 4gb ram. Also, I’m trying to stay in Group B for security updates.

Thanks, in advance for any and all help.

sbwfw.sys is part of the ThreatTrack Security Firewall SDK.

        PKCano,

So are you saying that my Vipre Internet Secrity is messing up, or that it just found something? Nothing shows in the Threat track Security control panel.
        Thanks,

        Dave

According to the information on the BSOD screen, sbwfw.sys caused the PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA that caused the BSOD.

Blue screens are often caused by a driver error.

When I see a driver listed on the crash page, it becomes my #1 suspect, until I have ruled it out.

sbwfw.sys’s description is “ThreatTrack Security Firewall SDK TDI Firewall Driver“.

I would try eliminating the firewall driver as a suspect.  Try temporarily using the default Windows firewall until you get a handle on the problem.

            JohnW,

Well, the only thing I have done was to do a System Restore to 2 days earlier, just before installing the newest version of Adobe flash. With the earlier version reinstalled by System Restore, all SEEMS to be OK. I’ll wait to see what else, if anything, happens.

I may be wrong, but, I am getting the feeling that Flash caused the problem. So for now, I’ll not be installing the latest version of that. Maybe later, if there is another version or if there are no more problems.

Thanks for the help and advice.

Hope you’re right.  But one thing I have also learned to watch out for is security software that performs silent version upgrades in the background.  That seems to be the trend with some of them these days.  I don’t have any first hand knowledge about Vipre, but you might want to inquire about the version you are running and if there have been any recent product updates.  Couldn’t hurt to ask!

              JohnW,

The only thing that gets updated automatically is the definitions, twice daily. The software was last updated in May. There have been no problems with it until this. I have everything set to notify me when there is a software update, but not to automatically install.

I hear ya!  Food for thought when troubleshooting, is to always run through these three questions first.  Then sift for clues … it ain’t always obvious …

              1. What’s changed?

              2. Is anybody else experiencing the problem?

              3. When did the problem start?

              JohnW,

Thanks for the tip. I have just reinstalled the latest version of Flash about 2 hours ago. SO FAR, no problems. I will see what happens down the road. Hopefully, all will be well. If all goes well in a few days, I’ll see what I can do to get this thread marked “SOLVED”.

I think you have it fixed, but just FYI, I did notice that Adobe released Flash Version 26.0.0.126 on June 14. They then released Flash Version 26.0.0.131 on June 17 due to a fix of a bug with mouse interaction of Flash content.

Since that sounds like a mouse driver issue, MAYBE Flash was involved in some way and conflicted with the Viper driver.

Sometimes I am beginning to think that current updates and drivers are feeling like Windows 3.1 at times. 😉

        Bill C,

Thanks for the tip. Yes, I know about the double update for Flash. I had BSOD with both of them. I have uninstalled both, and have disabled VIPRE. Last night I got another BSOD with the computer offline. At this point, I don’t know what is going on. Will be calling VIPRE tech support later today.

Busy day today running around. I’ll post results here when I find out anything.

Thanks to all for the help.

Unfortunately, drivers are not always disabled like services when a product is disabled.  The .sys files in “C:\Windows\System32” can still load when Windows boots.

Sometimes you also need to rename the driver with a new extension that Windows will not see and load, or remove it entirely.  Here are a couple of free tools to investigate with.

If you just want a quick snapshot of all the loaded drivers, the file path, and the manufacturer name, you can run DriverView by Nirsoft.

          http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/driverview.html

For more control, using a utility like Microsoft’s Sysinternals Autoruns will give you an overview and startup control over of all of the programs that Windows starts up, plus all of the services, drivers, codecs, etc.  It’s a little more complicated and can break things if you disable too much.  Best used carefully, and backup the registry before making any changes.

Well, I finally got off the phone from Threat Track Security (VIPRE). After being on hold for over 3 hours, the tech person told me that they are aware of the conflict with the latest version of Flash and Vipre. They are working on a fix and will e-mail all that have called them about this problem with directions for the fix. In the mean time, I was told to try to avoid programs and sites that use Flash, even older versions, as mush as possible. If another BSOD occurs, just hold power button until shut down, wait about 3 to 4 minutes, then reboot normally.

At least I am confident that for now the problem is not in my computer, just a software glitch. I’ll post back here when I hear from them as to the solution.

That reads like a Vipre bug, Dave.

Difficult to stay clear of sites and ads using Flash, better to ensure all traces of Flash are removed, Flash uninstaller listed here: https://www.askwoody.com/forums/topic/1000002-links-to-flash-update-resources/#post-83026

        satrow,

Yes, it is a VIPRE problem. They have acknowledged that and are working on it. I’m trying to be patient and wait for a solution.

Just talked to VIPRE again this morning. Nothing new. They are STILL working on the problem. I’m trying to be patient, BUT, I also wonder WHAT they are doing, if anything. ill post here again when I get any information.

In the meantime, while you are waiting, you could always try out one of the free solutions.  Avira Free is very light and dependable, Avira has been my main AV for the past couple of years.

Many folks also like Avast Free, or even Defender.  Bitdefender Free is also available, but mentioning that one always seems to bring out a few haters, although I don’t have any problems with it running on one of my systems.

Haven’t heard anything from VIPRE as of last night. BUT, I also have NOT had another BSOD since last post here. I assume (yes, I now what it stands for) they have the problem fixed.

Well, 6 months of no Flash problems, BUT, it showed its’ ugly face again today. Same BSOD, same results. This time I disabled Flash, and I’m thinking of removing it. Just have a couple sites that require it, so hopefully there won’t be a bunch of problems.

I have a call in to Vipre, but, have not heard back yet. Will see what happens when I get back online tomorrow.

Well, I finally got an update from VIPRE. They sent me a link Friday to update their installation. Took about 5 minutes to complete. SO FAR, no more problems. Flash is fully updated, as well as Defcon 3 recommendations.

For now, lets mark this one as SOLVED ! ! !

Thanks to Woody and the crew for all the help.
