I’m looking for a quick, clean way of renaming a bunch of files. Actually, looking for a way to rename 100’s of jpg’s. I have all my digital photos on my HD with no uniform method of naming the files. Now that I’ve come up with a good way to name, sort & catalog them, there’s a lot of renaming that needs to be done…

How neat it would be if there was an app that would show a thumb of the jpg and allow the user to run down the list renaming them with speed as the top priority. I know that explorer will show the thumbs and I can right-click rename, but that will take two forevers and all I have is one.

    Any ideas?

You might start by browsing through the auto naming pic files thread. Not sure there’s anything to do it exactly the way you’re after though.

BTW, in explorer (& irfanview if you prefer), when viewing thumbs, F2 gets you to the rename directly, and the arrow keys navigate from thumb to thumb.

I use apple’s iPhoto which does this automatically when you import the pictures from camera or disk. It’s a free program, but you might have to upgrade your hardware.

Try IRFANVIEW (http://www.irfanview.com/%5B/url%5D). You can step through a directory picture by picture renaming as you go or point and click at thumbnail views. Lots of other useful features. Freeware. Fast. Small. Reliable.

Thanks Bob. Looks like a neat utility. It also led me to a freeware site that is excellent. The rest of the world probably already knows but it was new for me…
It’s NoNags , and they rate the freeware by giving it a number of Ducks.
