I recently experienced an unexpected setting change in a couple Excel 2003 workbooks that I commonly used. None of the formulas were working without a manual change to the cell. I went to Tools->Options->Calculation and reset it from Manual to Automatic. Why would the setting change to Manual by itself?

Also, is there a size limitation for MS Excel 2003. I have many workbooks that have tens of thousands of formulas for reporting purposes. The workbook is at 55MB. When would I experience performance limitations or catastrophic failure? Thanks.

If you happen to open a workbook with calculation set to manual, calculation will remain set to manual during that session unless you explicitly reset it to automatic. If calculation is set to manual, all workbooks you save will have calculation set to manual…

The practical size limit for an Excel workbook depends on the speed of your PC and the amount of memory available. It’s difficult to specify a “hard” limit.

        Thank you Hans. Very helpful.
