If you mean the icon seen in Windows Explorer then no you can’t easily change it. That is meant to show you the application which is used by default to open the file. If you mean something different then please clarify – a picture would be good.

      Sportsman:

You will need to have an icon (ICO) file to use in any case. That part of the process is easy.

You may already have the icon, but in case you don’t:

      1. Find a picture that you want to use for the icon — in your case, your “source symbol”.
      2. Open it in Paint.
      3. Save it in format BMP, but specify ICO as the file extension. (e.g. mypicture.ico)
      4. You can now use it as an icon.

In fact, I have a folder on my computer called C:ICONS. I keep all of the icons I have made in this folder. It is really easy to keep track of them and to use them as desired.

I often make an icon for each one of the websites I regularly visit, and I then use that icon in my shortcut for that website.

Is this what you are talking about?

      32501-PDF

I’m sorry, but I do not download anything I am not familiar with.

Evidently the web site changed their download symbol.

    • #1360351

Medico could you please someone here to download so I can see I will be greatful

    • #1360365

Post a screen shot so we can see it. I DO NOT download from unknown sites, sorry, but no I will not download it.

    • #1360368

Medico I am not technical do not know what to do with a screen shot so everyone can see it.here is a link http://www.adobe.com/products/reader.html it is under price on the adobe you will see the symbol

    • #1360373

When the screen shot you wish to post is on your screen, tap the Prt Sc key. Then open Paint and choose Paste. This will put the screen shot into Paint. At this point you can crop the area of your screen shot to further emphasize the shot you wish to show. Once done, close Paint and choose to save the screen shot at a place of your choosing (desktop for example) and name it something appropriate.

Next use the 32503-Symbol and follow the prompts to post the screen shot in your post.

I would guess the website changed their graphics and that is why the symbol changed in your case. The symbol does not come from Adobe on that web site, it comes from the web site developers.

Medico I tryed it it said bitmap invalid maybe I did not do it right take me threw it one more time I know their is something called a snippett tool dose the same thing ?

    • #1360385

Yes, the snippet tool will work as well. Try saving the file from Paint as a jpg rather than a bitmap. The jpg image will be much more compressed. When you close Paint and it offers to save the file, the drop down list gives you several alternatives. I have found the jpg works best for these screen shots.

    • #1360394

If you’re trying to create an icon file, save it in bitmap format, but use .ico as the file extension rather than .bmp.

      Am I misunderstanding the question?

I am trying to get the sports newsletter symbol which I got a few weeks before is their a setting in adobe ?

      • #1362960

Just create a shortcut to the Adobe Reader. Unlike the Reader icon, shortcut icons can be changed to anything you like. Make sure that the Adobe icon itself is not on the screen while the shortcut, with your preferred icon, is on display. I think there is a way to eliminate the arrow that indicates the shortcut but I don’t remember that at the moment. In any event, the arrow will not show in a toolbar such as QuickLaunch.

Jim, I do not believe he is trying to create an Icon. He is wondering why the Icon in the web page has changed. I believe the web page developer has changed the look of the page. I have asked more than once for a screen shot of the offending page so we can see what the OP is talking about, and have posted instructions for including a screen shot. OP wishes someone to open the links he provided, but I have declined as I do not download things from unknown sites. I believe when he tried to save the screen shot he left the default bitmap extension which gave problems. I then explained about saving the screenshot as a jpg file. That’s as far as we have gotten.

    • #1360979

Medico I have the screenshot saved I am trying to get it in the the thread here can you tell me what to do to get it in the thread here get back to me

Sportman4, I think you may be missing some necessary step to create your icon. I don’t use Paint, so I will describe the steps I follow to create icons using Faststone Image Viewer (a free and intuitive photo touch-up and viewing application. http://www.faststone.com). Take any picture format and crop it exactly square. This is a very important step. If the photo is not square, it will not be saved as an .ico file. Open whatever picture you want to use as your icon, crop it as you desire as long as it is square. the size is not particularly important. I have made icons out of 200×200 photos as well as 16×16. doesn’t matter what format the picture is when you crop it, but when you save it, you manually change the extension to .ico then click “save”. Now go to the folder you saved it in and your icon will be waiting there. Now go to the desktop or wherever you have your pdf shortcut located and right click on the icon. Somewhere on the window that opens up is the opportunity to “change icon”. You may have a header tab “customize” that you also have to click. When you find “change Icon, you click that when the next window opens, you select “browse” and browse to the folder you have the desired icon stored in. Double click the icon and you will have two or three times to select “OK” or “continue”. When you have run out of windows popping up, you will have a new pdf icon. Now I hope I haven’t forgotten any step in my description here. When you find the Sports Newsletter Symbol that you are desiring, do a right click and “save picture as” and you will have your picture. Just remember that windows has to tell you that the width is the same as the height to make an icon with it. Once you have your icon, Word 2010 has the capability to remove the background if it meets certain limitations. Of course other highly sophisticated and complicated applications can remove backgrounds, too. Good luck.

john3347 I have the adobe pdf icon save can you tell me the steps here to post the icon here

    • #1361592

As I said in a previous post, just use the icon shown to post a screen shot from your PC.

      32547-Symbol

    • #1361630

      did I do it right

    • #1361639

NO! If you have an Image on your computer, any Image including a screen shot, that is in Image format (png or jpg are best) choose From Computer, then Select Files (you can upload up to 5 files I believe). You will then find the Image you wish to upload, select it, and Choose Upload file.

      32554-InsertImageFromComputer

For example, that’s how I just uploaded this Image to show you.

    • #1361776

Medico I been trying to save the Image on your computer, with snippet tool it will not save can you take me threw it step by step please

    • #1361785

Have the image on the desktop. Press the Prt Sc key. Open Paint. Press Ctrl+V. Save the Image to your desktop as a jpg file.

This is a very simple process.

    • #1361797

32562-Capture here it did I do it right see where it says piontwise it should be piontwise symbol can I fix it on adobe ?

    • #1361800

If it is a PDF file then evidently Piontwise decided to change their default symbol to conform to the Adobe standard symbol. I do not believe you can easily change this. If it still opens the way it’s supposed to, just get used to the new symbol.

Can I revisit this question to see if we can find a solution?

@ sportman4: I think we need to establish a bit of clarity here. Are you telling us that on a website you see the standard Adobe icon for the pdf you are trying to download, or are you saying that once downloaded to your PC, the icon is the Adobe icon rather than the preview of the file that you used to see?

      This is critical to establish.

In the first case, there is nothing we can do. If the icon on the download site has changed to the standard Adobe icon, it has been placed there by the person controlling the website and only they can change it.

In the second case, where it is showing the standard Adobe icon on your PC after downloading instead of the preview (which I suspect is what you are describing), there maybe a fix.

If it is the the case that the pdf is not being previewed on your local PC, you may not have the pdf filter set correctly in the indexing options. This sounds complicated, but it’s not really. Follow the detailed instructions on this site.

Once you have run that, then proceed to use the thumbnail fix from here.

It is important to follow each step, including the rebuild of the index (which will take a long time). Once run, it should tell you that the pdfFilter is registered in the indexing options and, if you have installed the thumbnail fix, the pdf preview should be displayed on your PC.

    • #1362496

You are being less than clear about what it is you want. If you want the grey/silver icon say that. If you want the file itself, but are uncertain if the file you are getting is correct because the icon is different ( the standard Adobe pdf icon), say that.

Posting links and asking us to download something for you is not good form. We will be glad to educate you, but not work for you. We volunteer here. Please respect that.

That said, here’s the icon file as a .bmp and if you were interested in the document, heres the header of the document that downloads. Changing the icon is done in Windows and is a global change (system wide, all PDF icons will change).
