My Win7 Ultimate PC at work acts the same as the OP. So, I guess there may have been an “enhancement” or “undocumented feature” discovered.

I ‘appear’ to have discovered that I cannot copy all of the contents of an installation disk to a flash drive under Win 7. This may be a matter of permissions, and I say ‘appear’ because I haven’t gone back to my Vista machine, where I was able to do it previously, to test it. This is important, because one convenient way of installing Win 7 on a netbook is to use a flash drive with the contents of the installation disk.

If you can rip to an ISO file you can use Microsoft Store: Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool.

Also see Install Windows 7 From USB Drive/Pen Drive. This thread talks about Win7 beta but should still work for RTM.

Thanks for that link Joe. I knew there was a way but had never kept track of it.

I think it vastly superior to install the O/S on any computer from a flash drive, especially if it happens to be a valuable, refined, and delicate laptop. (Forget all advertising to the contrary.) The last thing I want is that blasted churning primitive cement-mixer of a DVD drive interrupting the smooth flow of installation data. I don’t want a threshing machine – I want a computer.

          Picky, picky, picky.
