Cannot create Rescue Media using Macrium – Some quick questions.

This is my first post on this forum, so please bear with me.

I used (for the first time) the backup/restore program Macrium Reflect.

Here are the steps I followed:
1. Did a full image backup to my external (E) drive. 74 GB used 389 GB free. Successfully ran.
2. Ran the Create Rescue Media.
3. Selected Win PE 5.0 Since I have Win 8.0.
When prompted, I choose USB Device (E) instead of using my CD/DVD burner.
(PS: I notice the statement on my (E) drive stating 465.76.)

During the run I get error code 6 – Target disk does not contain a suitable free space area for partition creation.

So I’m a little confused about the Reflect process.

Some Questions:
How can I create a rescue media correcting the error code 6?

Should I have created the rescue media prior to performing the Image backup?

What does the recovery media contain to require 465 GB. Is it trying to image my full external (E) drive?

I notice Macrium Reflect created a Drive (F) partition image of my local (C) drive.
If I have the full image backed up on my external disk (E), do I need the Backup copy (F) resident on my hard drive? i.e. can i selectively copy items from my image backup to my local drive?

Can a full Image restore commence without the Rescue Media?

I think it’s objecting to the format of the USB device:

Check for active FAT32 partition in removeable media
WARNING: No active FAT partitions found
WARNING: UEFI rescue media require a FAT partition to boot successfully, cannot use this partition

Not accurate. Mine is formatted for FAT32

Ok, you’re using Win 8.0. Does your machine use UEFI & Secure boot? I’m guessing it does since you received this message:

What this means is that to create boot media for this setup you need to have the USB device formatted as Fat32. Also make sure you are selecting the USB device in the Macrium menu and not your external hard drive.

I just purchase this external drive(E) and used it out-of-the-box, w/o formatting. It needs to be formatted to FAT32.

Just a couple of follow-up questions.
1. Can I create the recovery media before a full image backup.
2. Can I unmount the (F) drive Macrium cloned from my local (C).
3. Eventually I would like to test the recovery media. Can it be tested from my external (E) drive,
or do I need to put it on a CD/DVD burner. Is there documentation describing How to test the Recovery Media.

Only the Boot Media needs to be Fat32. The External Drive where you are storing the Images should be NTFS for efficiency. HTH :cheers:

You cannot use the backup disk for the bootable rescue disk because you already have data on it. Use a USB stick – you only need a GB.

1. No requirement to have bootable media first.
2. Did you really clone to F: or is F: the backup target? You didn’t mention F: in your first post.
3. Boot from the recovery device with the backup device also connected. Confirm you can read the backups on the backup device. There is no need to copy the data back, being able to boot and read is enough.

I’ll go purchase 1 USB stick to create the recovery media.

In regards to the (F) drive. I did mention it in my first post under questions.
I am just curious as to what it is used for other than being a backup copy of my local (C).
My target (E) drive has the backup image file in the folder i created.
The (F) appears to have the same attributes, text as my local (C) used/unused GB.
When I right click (F) and highlight Macrium text it has an option to “unmount Macrium image”.

Since I have the backup image file saved on my external drive(E), Can I unmount this (F) drive?

Yes you can UnMount the F: drive which is just a way to Explore what is on your E: drive in the Image files. Actually, you should always UnMount those volumes after using especially before shutting down your computer or disconnecting the external drive. HTH :cheers:

Ok thanks RG.

Will leave my external disk as NTSF and buy as stick to be formatted as FAT32 for my recovery media build.
Also unmount the F drive.
