    Hi all you helpful people!
I have an interesting problem with a program originally running happily on Win7 and now installed on Win8 but with real issues.
The program will not retain any of the preferences I choose.

Here is what I have tried:
I chose ‘Run as Administrator’ and the program would not run (see error message below.
I changed ‘Permissions’ on the exe file to make sure there were no restrictions.
Finally I changed a couple of preferences using Regedit, but the expected different responses did not occur (e.g. view Status Bar = ‘StatusBar’ set to (1)). This has me totally confused! (I also changed that preference from within the program and observed that the Registry key value did not change.

Here is the Error Message I get when I try Run As Administrator.

Cannot open the librarian.System Error Desc: No COM error information.
    Resolution:
Please restart the application and try again.
If the problem persists please restart the system.
If the problem persists please contact technical support.

BTW I am logged in on an Administrator account.

    Any help would be appreciated.
    Robin

      What program is it?

      • #1434889

Zondervan Pradis 6 (bible software – Zondervan have abandoned it!)

    • #1434893

If it requires Zondervan support for it to run then that may be the problem but have you checked the Compatibility mode in its Properties to see if changing that has any effect ?

      • #1434962

It has never required Zondervan support to run, so I doubt that that is the problem.
I have tried the compatibility modes but they give the same result, i.e. Runs OK except cannot save preferences, but will not Run as Administrator.

I am most interested to know
        (1) if anyone can interpret the Error Code:
Cannot open the librarian.System Error Desc: No COM error information”

        (2) If anyone can suggest why changing the data in the Registry keys using Regedit makes no difference to the way the program runs.

Are there any other programs that you are unable to run as an admin and have you run Win 8’s Troubleshooter ?

No, no other programs with this problem.
Yes, Windows Troubleshooter does not help.

I think I will try to reinstall the program. (That’s quite a pain!)

        Thanks.

Try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7, and then select “run as administrator”.
Run a Program in Compatibility Mode in Windows 8

Check for an updated version of the program that is Windows 8 compatible.
If Zondervan no longer supports the program you may be out of luck, seek an alternative.

Try running the program in compatibility mode for Windows 7, and then select “run as administrator”.

        Thanks everyone for your suggestions.
Finally resolved by a complete reinstall (from original through updates – painful but successful).
