I am in Europe since 2 days. Since I am there I have an issue sending email messages from both of my accounts: Charter.net (my default) and Outlook.com within Windows Live Mail 2012. Both accounts are setup correctly and according the advice from Charter and MS and at home, the accounts work perfectly.

Receiving Email is also no problem on both accounts.

I am using Windows 8.1 Update. There is one interesting thing: sending email from the MS email app in Metro works, though I think it uses the same account set-up Outlook.com in WLM 2012. I changed ports and other data like SSL etc. but nothing helps on both accounts . Is there any explanation for the behavior of WLM 2012 or the servers. I am totally puzzled.

Like most ISPs, Charter have not allowed email to be sent from a non-Charter connection for many years (to restrict spammers).

You can apparently work around this by configuring their mobile email settings: Can’t Send/Receive Email while Traveling

I’m not sure why an Outlook.com account would not work with WLM2012, but the easy solution is to send via webmail.

Thanks, BruceR. Sorry to say, it does not work for charter.net

And some ISPs do not let Send Mail work if not from an internal (to the ISPs domain) email server .

Just because you don't know where you are going doesn't mean any road will get you there.

The ISPs I have to deal with call the situation relaying, prevent sending from one of their accounts while logged into a competing ISP and do make available the Webmail page that can be reached by the Internet browser from any connection.

Before you wonder "Am I doing things right," ask "Am I doing the right things?"
