Can’t Access Gmail Using Thunderbird v38.0.1 (continuation)

Since my original post is too old, had to create new thread (old one is here: http://windowssecrets.com/forums/showthread//174232-Can-t-Access-Gmail-Using-Thunderbird-v38-0-1):

I’m back on this again with no success!

I created the batch file and attempted to run TB from the batch file (ran as Administrator).
Resultant log is on my desktop as ‘imap.log’ but is blank.

Went to my gmail account (logged directly into gmail) and found out it was blocked by gmail because they said I was using a ‘less secure app’ so I turned that on – for now (to allow gmail to log me in using TB v38).

Tried again running batch file and it’s still blank.

Here’s the contents of the batch file I created:

set NSPR_LOG_MODULES=imap:5,timestamp
set NSPR_LOG_FILE=%USERPROFILE%Desktopimap.log
“D:Thunderbird v38.0.1thunderbird.exe”

Once Thunderbird started, it asked for my password. WOuld that be the password I use to directly access my google account? Or is there a different one?

Every time I’ve set up a GMail account on a person’s PC, using OE 6.0, Windows Mail, O.E. Classic, etc.
I’ve set it up as a POP email account. Then to make it work, I’ve had to go to GMail and log in and set it up to be a POP email account and NOT an IMAP account. Then everything works perfectly.

Thunderbird? I tried it once, didn’t like it and have never used it again.
OE Classic is easier to set up and works pretty much like Outlook Express, or Windows Mail.

I’m curious, have you tried to upgrade Thunderbird lately? (The latest version of Thunderbird seems to be 45.4.0.)
I know that versions 31 and earlier had problems with Gmail, so perhaps there are still problems.
I’m guessing you’re using these steps at Mozilla to set it up?

I use TB since 2007 (mostly on Linux, though), getting a Gmail messages without a problem from both Windows and Linux TB on different machines. However, I use POP3 as a protocol, saving IMAP only for backup purposes. I have heard none about security issues for using Gmail and TB.

The thing I suppose is a non-secure account. You can try downloading the Gmail mailbox content (for example, using the link provided here) and then restoring it to a different webmail server (Yahoo!Mail, for example). If TB will have a security warning from the new account, too, then you can suspect the content of your account, not Thunderbird problems.

Again, you can just try to upgrade your TB to a modern version. Sometimes it can help.

I had a similar problem when I changed my Gmail password. Every time I tried to use Gmail with Outlook 365 I was being asked for a password. Every password I tried failed with an error message. A trawl of the Internet provided the answer for me. I had to open my Gogle account, go to Sign In & Security and scroll down to the bottom of the page. I then had to change the “Allow less secure apps:” to ON. After rebooting it was all back to normal. You will get a couple of warnings from Google about security, but it worked for me. Seems that Google thinks signing in from Outlook is not secure enough for them. Might be worth a try

Not sure what happened, but just tried again tonight to access my mail using Thunderbird and it’s working!

So I’m considering this solved – until I can again not log in.

Currently running Thunderbird v38.0.1. Will probably upgrade to latest version soon.

Need to figure out how to get all my “sent” messages on gmail to my “sent” folder on Thunderbird. Anyone got suggestions?
