I have a desktop computer which has no problems. The problems are with my laptop.

I have a Toshiba laptop running Windows XP Home with an Atheros AR5004G Wireless Network Adapter. I have a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband Router. We are running 3 desktops off the wired connections, and they are all fine. If I plug into the laptop a Cat-5 cable, I can access the network and the internet through the wired connection. But I cannot use the wireless connection. Since there is no cable in the place I want to use the laptop, this is a pain.

I ran the Linksys diagnostic (NetSet Assistant) mentioned in another thread, and I got the message that Linksys was unable to detect a wireless adapter on my computer. I have double checked that the Wireless Communication Switch on the laptop is on. I have run ConfigFree (Connectivity Doctor) which came on the laptop, and it tells me that the network adapter is disabled. But I have tried everything I can think of to enable it and nothing works.

    Anyone able to help me?

Is the Atheros AR5004G a PC card installed in an external socket, or an internal mini-PCI card?
Have you installed the correct driver for this card?

It came in the laptop, so it must be the internal kind.

Does this computer work on any other Wireless network?

If needed go to a library or shopping mall with a wireless network and see if it works there.

Since “the network adapter is disabled” I suspect it won’t work on any wireless network.

Do you have the correct drivers installed for this wireless network card?

Thank you all for your help. I figured it out (with help from Microsoft Knowledge Base #871122). Somehow a little box needed to be checked. The box that says “Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings.” I don’t know how it got unchecked, but checking that box fixed it. That stupid little box cost me a week! Aaaarrrrgh!

Oh, well. In the process I learned a lot about networking! (That’s the only silver lining I can see right now!)
