Earlier I ran Windows Update – seemed to go through smoothly and quickly – KB044285 was installed but when I restarted and tried to sign in with my PIN (as usual) I got the message ‘Something went wrong and your PIN isn’t available’. Signed in ok with my password; tried restarting but same problem; tried changing my Pin but still the same. In the end I uninstalled the update but the problem still remains.

Help! I’m not an experienced user and I don’t know what to do and worried about totally locking myself out. Google suggests varies fixes but I really need some trusted advice.

    TIA

Remove the PIN and add a new one:

See Fix Something happened and your PIN isn’t available on Windows 11.

I don’t know what to do and worried about totally locking myself out.

      I’ve been there.  Scary place.

Going forward, consider image backups. They are my monthly update stress buster. With an up to the moment image backup at the ready and tucked safely away on two drives, taking the monthly update is stress free. If a monthly update causes problems, it’s a heck of a lot easier to simply restore the image backup rather than trying to fix an issue caused by the monthly update. Restore first and ask questions later stress free.

Image software? Macrium Reflect and Acronis True Image are a couple. There are many.
