Just got a call from a friend (a hardware guy with only limited Access knowledge) who is trying to help a client do a quickie Access report in an Access97 database. In database window, however, the New and Design buttons are dimmed for Reports and Forms. Apparently there is no security (no log-in screen). In a newly created database, this was available, just not in the existing database. I have no idea how long this condition has existed; apparently they don’t generally do any such maintenance on the database. Any ideas?

an MDB or MDE ? I just got stymied by the exact same till i realized it was an MDE

I bet you are right, it probably is a .mde database! That makes perfect sense in explaining the problems. I’m getting this all 2nd hand, but I think the db was named .mdb; but I remember I once had to rename a .mde to .mdb just to make Word mailmerge work correctly.

        Thanks!

The .mdb file doesn’t happen to be read-only at the file level (i.e. the read-only flag is set in Windows Explorer), or to have been opened as read-only?
