I have a user who is now getting an error message every time she tries to go into Word, ver. 2000. She get an error, “MS Word for Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.” The error signature is AppName:windword.exe. App Ver. 9.0.0.3822 ModName windword. with same ModVer and Offset: 00395c27. I tried repairing Office, then reinstalling without removing the old, and finally reinastalling after removing the old version, but the error message still comes up every time we try going into Word. I didn’t do any cleanup in the registry. Any suggestions on how to get this problems solved are welcome!

I had the same problem using Word 2000 in 2024.

First make sure that system and hidden files are visible in your Windows view settings.

Then search entire disc for normal.dot file which is a Word’s template file. This does not get deleted when reinstalling Word. You need to delete every normal.dot file, and Word will start with fresh uncorrupted template.

I had three normal.dot files. Deleted them and all works again.
